@enog I inverted your problem: instead of a squash in the flower bed, I have a flower in the squash bed. I have no idea how long this sunflower has been growing in the container with this Delicata squash; I only know I missed it completely until it grew a flower head.

It's been fun figuring out what vegetable plants will and will not grow in various sized containers. Most die almost immediately or look so sickly that I feel terrible for them. Some thrive. And then there are the “bonsai vegetables”: plants that seem to be perfectly happy, but grow unusually small.

These nasu (Japanese eggplant) fall into that last category. The plants are about a third the size of normal, flowered and fruited way early, and the fruit are almost bite sized. Unfortunately the also don't taste very good, possibly because I'm misjudging when to pick them. But they are quite pretty.

Squirrels.

Not only have they resumed BITING the odd potato that they unearth, they seem to be trying to barter.

This is the second day in a row that they've left walnuts, gleaned from a block away, beside the pots they've disturbed. Next the little bastards will be full-fledged capitalists, putting dogs¹ to work for them or something.

I had read that some cultivars of tomatoes will grow as perennials. I've tried that, including with cultivars specifically marketed as perennials, and it just didn't work. It seems like tomatoes, more than any other vegetable plant, seem very aware of the seasons: I've seeded plants in May, June, and July, and they'd all start fruiting about the same time and dying about the same time, and no amount of TLC had an effect on that.

So I was surprised and delighted to see my two Cherry Falls containers putting out new growth and lots of blooms here in September. I'm going to do my best to keep them happy.

I think I should make myself a "teeny tinies" salad out of mini cukes and cherry tomatoes. Or maybe a pearl bocconcini salad with the gorgeous Genovese basil. Hmm.

Also, it looks like the Liso Kolkata gourds are starting to fruit. Turns out that despite the name, Liso Kolkata, Cucumis anguria, is African, not Indian. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Currently have a lot of them on vines (I grow them upward because: containers) in various stages.

Varieties:
Blacktail Mountain, Sugar Baby, Yellow Doll.

All are miniatures, with the largest growing about 7 inches long.
