No One Is Talking About This

I didn't know what this novel was about before I read it, & if I did I probably wouldn't have.

I was interested in the first half as a look at the life of someone who is far too Online. I thought the way it is structured in short fragments was reminiscent of social media, especially . It did make addictive reading and give me that zoned out feeling from too long doom scrolling.

But the 2nd half switched to incredibly tragic family events.. while keeping the same fragmented structure.

I just didn't feel the two halves worked together.

In the end, it's just kind of.. fine. I don't think it's one I'll remember reading.

Nightcrawling

I was disappointed by this one. I had high hopes for it but despite the subject being a story that should be told this is going to be a forgettable one for me because I felt no connection to the characters.

I think the writing style was part of the issue for me. It is overwritten to my taste. Leila Mottley is a talented writer and she can write beautiful sentences. But, more often than not I find too much flowery & descriptive language gets in the way of character and plot. If I'm struggling to work out what is actually happening in the moment through the poetic metaphor I am not connected to the story or the character.

Kiara always felt too detached for me, I found her cold & I just couldn't get invested in her story as much as I really wanted to. I felt like there was always a wall up & I was watching her from a distance.

Read like 2 novels.

I didn't know what it really about before I read it.

Liked 1st half as a look at the life of someone who is far too Online.

Short fragments were reminiscent of ! It did make addictive reading & gave that detached feeling of too long spent doom scrolling.

But 2nd half switches focus to emotionally wrenching, incredibly tragic family events .. while keeping the same structure.

📚 Nightcrawling by Letitia Mottley

+ Amazing achievement for teenage author.
+ Gives voice to marginalised POV, a deserving story.
- Too much poetic, flowery language gets in the way of character & plot.
- I found Kiara too detached. I didn't feel like I knew *her* & couldn't get invested in her story.
- Found it a very dry & slow reading. Ultimately forgettable.

The best book I've read in recent years was hands down Bunny by Mona Awad - I'm still thinking about it! It inspired me to write the most detailed review/analysis I have done since my English Lit days!

Finished Tomorrow, And Tomorrow, And Tomorrow.
Only a 3/5 for me.

It started strong, LOVED the writing, liked the characters but the structure didn't work for me.

Too many time jumps felt fragmented, too much detail on the process of game development was boring & I lost connection to the characters.
I needed to spend time with them being people, & less focus on how they built their company.

Long, tedious reading I powered through to the end just to finish it.

Cosmopolis is the only DeLillo novel I’ve read, and I am not sure why because I quite enjoyed it. What do folks think? Think I’ll see if the library has White Noise. bbc.com/culture/article/202212
