The UICA (Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts) in Grand Rapids is closing. What a bummer.

I remember going to see art films at the Race Street Gallery in high school in the 80s. It was an intellectual wonder for a pretentious teenager like me.

UICA was acquired by Ferris State University in 2013, and lost its mojo shortly thereafter, eventually moving in 2021 into the stodgy old building that had formerly been the stodgy old Grand Rapids Art Museum.

I may not have paid it much attention in years, but I feel bad for the current generation of pretentious teenagers in my hometown who have one less place to find fellow weirdos and be inspired to do interesting things. I’m sure they’ll be fine, but it’s a drag this town can’t support something like the UICA.
