There seems to be a large disconnect between the academic literature on content warnings - that they don't work as intended - and common belief/usage on mastodon and elsewhere.
Why is this? Interested in hearing thoughts.
"In our review of 20 peer-reviewed studies...we found that trigger warnings can inflame existing stressors and exacerbate maladaptive behaviours...."

Grr. Argh. One of my writers groups has blown up *again* with people bitching about the fact #ContentWarnings exist.
Anyways, content warnings exist.
Here, have a blog post.
Spoiler alert: content warnings are a good thing.

”Existing research on content warnings, content notes, and trigger warnings suggests that they are fruitless, although they do reliably induce a period of uncomfortable anticipation. Although many questions warrant further investigation, trigger warnings should not be used as a mental-health tool.”

Thank you! I have gone through and adjusted all my posts to support #contentwarnings more effectively! Being sight impaired myself, I know the pain of Alt Text, or lack thereof!
Content Warnings on text (including fiction) are like allergen information on a menu. Nobody's saying you're not allowed to make a dish that contains peanuts, but the people who could be harmed by eating would like to know before they take a bite.

I'm not a massive fan of #ContentWarnings. I think they are generally overused for very silly things and are often annoying, but that's just me. That said, I've realised this morning that there's one thing I wish people CWd that others probably wouldn't be bothered about. I absolutely detest people smoking. If I see it in photos or even artwork of any form then I scroll past as fast as I can. I hate it. So please consider adding this to the list of things you might usually #CW. Thanks.
I use #ContentWarnings, #AltText and #HashTags with #CamelCase because I feel like it's polite and can help some people have a better experience with little effort from me.
Sometimes I forget.
I don't feel like judging people who don't because if an account is bothering me for any reason I block it and move on.
One account on here posted nudes. Often. I didn't like it. I blocked it. 🤷♂️

To all those folks on Mastodon complaining that American news stories such the air out of the place and any US news story needs to be labeled with a CW:
Good luck seeking to live in a protected bubble in which what happens in the US doesn't affect you outside the US.
Britain tried that approach with Brexit, vis-a-vis Europe. How's that working out?

And I love that both usages of #ContentWarnings are valid here. So, yeah, #ContentWarningsRock

One thing I do love about Mastodon is #ContentWarnings. I rarely need them as content warnings in the traditional sense of the word (but I **will** use them for that as needed).
But I post a lot about #FGO which is my preferred mobile game, fully aware that most of my followers aren’t interested. So I use content warnings to spare them the details that they’re not interested in (if I’m wrong about that, they can read the posts if they choose to).

Alright, so here is what future content I'll post, with possible content warnings:
- some art, personal or not, with animals, fantasy creatures (myth, alien, or what not), cw for insects, spiders and such as well;
- landscapes, for both personal and fanart;
- fanart (sfw and when's the case nsfw);
- transformation art with some mentions: sfw and nsfw are with consensual context, while forced tf is for vent/showing struggles;
- violence and gore for vent purposes.
And that right there is how long (8 months) it took before the first time I regretted setting my Mastodon settings to auto-expand content warnings and always show me images with the "sensitive" flag set.
It wasn't an evil image or anything, just an accurately tagged and flagged "three girls, one paper plate" scenario sexualizing a bodily function in a way that squicks me.

Ohhhh my goodness I am BEGGING people to be more specific with their CW’s. NSFW doesn’t cut it when I enjoy some content and feel really triggered by other content. #contentwarnings #nsfw
🥥 Please Note: If you're doing the right thing and using #AltText with images and GIFs on the #Fediverse and your instance has a character limit, text in #ContentWarnings and AltText counts against your character total.
I found out the hard way. That's why I'm trying to save you from that agony. 🥥

🥥 A few days ago I started approaching #AltText as a minimalist art form.
Today I am adding #ContentWarnings (CW) to my repertoire.
You've just witnessed an example, and were lucky enough to be present for the birth of this art form.
Please tell your grandchildren if you have or will have any.
PS: Does anyone know how I can get funding for my art? 🥥

@onecreativecat There are a few really weird #contentwarnings out there... Some are ace... Some are really far fetched
