Even if you haven't been to #GlacierNationalPark, you might have seen St. Mary Lake. It is featured in the long opening credits of the film "The Shining." I walked along the lake on a blustery day, which was Day 156 of my #ContinentalDivideTrail thru-hike.

After walking 2,300 miles of the #ContinentalDivideTrail, I thought I had seen about all there was to see. Then on Day 155, I stood at a spot unlike any other place in the U.S.

I had never been to #GlacierNationalPark before I thru-hiked the #ContinentalDivideTrail. What I knew about it was what I had seen in photos and videos. These weren't enough to prepare me for what was to come.

When I saw a rainbow hanging low over some mountains on Day 152 of my #ContinentalDivideTrail thru-hike, it reminded me of a similar day on the PCT. I felt then like I'd reached the end of a chapter and was starting a new one. Now I was feeling that way again.

Thru-hiking requires flexibility. Sometimes the trail throws a sudden change at you. Or maybe it's a surprise opportunity that comes your way. You should be prepared to roll with whatever happens.

Trail magic comes in many forms. Some are simple, like a snack bar or soft drink handed to a hiker. Some are extraordinarily generous.

On Day 145 of my #ContinentalDivideTrail thru-hike, I heard about a remarkable amount of trust a stranger gave to another hiker, and it wasn't the first time I'd heard of this kind of trail magic.

The large birds I saw circling in the sky on Day 143 of my #ContinentalDivideTrail thru-hike made me wish I was up there with them. That was especially so because I was carrying a heavy load of food and water.
