An explanation of why #ControlledDigitalLending (where you buy a physical copy of a book and then scan it yourself) is important.... And how it does not replace ebook licensing income streams
"A scanned book under CDL does not provide the same interactive experience as an e-book. CDL is primarily used for reference, preservation, or accessibility and may be useful in the following ways, among others:
To provide a DRM protected PDF or e-pub copy for students who cannot travel to the library to get a reserves book off the shelf (provided they sequester the physical book)
For the print-disabled who want larger print, or to utilize optical character recognition to listen to a book that is otherwise not available in audio format
For digital Interlibrary Loan, a common library practice that can provide limited full book access to patrons and which is currently restricted under most licensing regimes – but which has been permitted via photocopying for years"

An academic #librarian summarizes the "anxiety of publishers and frustration of librarians" in the aftermath of the recent court decision against the #InternetArchive. Over time, he says, the decision in favor of publishers will "diminish the #library as a democratic institution that provides broad collections to everyone." He advocates permitting the original, modest version of #ControlledDigitalLending, which he describes as "one small attempt to level the playing field between those who produce and distribute books and those who steward them for many years after publication."

Thankfully, the husband has come up with an interesting angle on the #ControlledDigitalLending situation that I'll have to mull over more. Thank you, Friday night kid movie, for the ability to actually finish whole paragraphs, and not just the occasional sentence.
I have no doubt the kids would try to be empathetic but I'm not sure I have it in me to attempt to describe the nuances around #ControlledDigitalLending to the primary school crowd right now. 😧
People seem very surprised by the summary judgment in the #controlledDigitalLending case.
The IA's case always seemed quite weak to me (to be clear about my sympathies: I donate to both EFF and IA), and I thought that's why many librarians were rather annoyed with them for giving publishers the opportunity of a lawsuit under maximally favorable conditions.
Read this great write-up by @klillington on the case big publishers brought against the @internetarchive on #ControlledDigitalLending
