’s Record-Breaking Sea Temperatures Affecting

Story by Catrin Einhorn and Jason Gulley, July 31, 2023

"With ravaging Florida’s beloved reef, people who’ve devoted their careers to restoring coral in the sea are now racing to get it out of the water, to tanks on land. They’re pushing through feelings of grief and fear over the future to save what genetic material and young corals they can. But in the background, an existential question looms: How can they restore reefs if the ocean is getting too hot for coral to live there?

"While marine occur naturally, the eye-popping sea temperatures recorded off the Keys this month (one reading hit 101 degrees Fahrenheit, or just over 38 Celsius) have been made worse by global warming, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The world’s oceans have absorbed 90% of the additional heat unleashed by people burning fossil fuels and razing forests. Currently, about 44% of the is in a .

"The mass coral bleaching happening throughout the Keys is the most severe in the state’s history, Derek Manzello, the coordinator of NOAA’s Coral Reef Watch program, said. Surveys over the next few months are needed to understand how much coral has died.

"'I fear for the worst,' he said."

Are you concerned about the weather anomalies, or how warm the ocean has become? Has the tipping point of no return been crossed?

Reefs, sea life stressed as water temps set records :

Rachel Silverstein, the executive director for Miami Waterkeeper, said pollution leaves the bay fragile, increasing risk when high temperatures threaten to push it “over the brink.”

AAAS: "Coral reefs are home to the greatest microbial diversity on Earth." Coral reefs have abundant species of fish, invertebrates + algae, but now add to this list microbial species. "From 2016 to 2018, an international team of researchers aboard the sailing ship Tara studied 99 reefs off 32 islands across the Pacific Ocean, home to 80% of the world’s corals." On their travels they sequenced DNA from more than 5,000 samples of 3 coral species, 2 fish species + plankton. They were able to idenfy 500 million types of microorganisms, mostly bacteria. 'Microbes were most diverse among the plankton; among animals, the blade fire coral (Millepora platyphylla) and Moorish idol (Zanclus cornutus) had the most types.' Extrapolating these number to project the total reef microbial diversity in the Pacific, the number was equivalent to the previously estimated number for the whole planet, thus doubling the global number. The variation did not correlate with seawater temperature, salinity + other environmental conditions. Some bacteria provide them benefits, such as supplying B vitamins. This wealth of creatures may enhance resilience in the face of heat waves, pollution, turbidity, acidification, deoxygenation + other stressors. So, hang in there Nemo, + brighten up that bleached Cauliflower coral coral (Pocillopora meandrina) from Hoover's Reef, Kakako Bay, Keahole, Hawaii, USA Oct2015.

The oceans just reached their hottest temperature on record as El Nino looms. Here are 6 things to watch for

By Laura Paddison and Rachel Ramirez, CNN, Apr 3, 2023

Scientists have watched in astonishment as ocean temperatures have steadily risen over the past several years -- even as the cooling La Niña phenomenon had a firm grip on the Pacific. The oceans have been record-warm for the past four years, scientists reported in January. Then in mid-March, climatologists noted that global sea surface temperature climbed to a new high.

Here are 6 things to watch out for:

1. The world could breach 1.5 degrees of warming for the first time

2. There could be more drought-busting rain in the West

3. Drought, heat and fire elsewhere

4. Warmer Pacific Ocean fuels stronger cyclones

5. Coral reefs could see catastrophic bleaching

6. More Antarctic ice melt

Hotter land and sea surfaces. deniers cherry-pick the troughs. One today said how cold it was in Sydney this year!

Scientists also look at trends. This trend is clear, and it is damaging.

E.g., Prof. Terry Hughes explained increasingly frequent events, and how it is ever more difficult for corals to recover between events.

The research Dana posted didn't touch on ecological effects. There are likely many, but one high-visibility effect is mass coral bleaching events. There has been much published on this.

I highly recommend the Netflix documentary Chasing Coral: netflix.com/title/80168188

It's a beautifully produced film that takes a deep dive into the issue.
