The first I've discovered this year on in , Iowa. My ID app suggests that they are Anemone hepatica, aka liverwort aka kidneywort aka pennywort & I tend to agree. This would be a new species for me. I think they're gorgeous and I may see if I can't add this species to my at some point.

It was an incredible year for American bald eagles along the in and , Iowa. But the beginning of March is typically the end of the migratory visit and the eagles move north to breed. Sorry to see them go but look forward to our encounters next year.

Other than the usual focus & framing concerns (had to go w/ a landscape crop w/ this image) it's been my experience that it's difficult to find an angle on a gull that can't produce a beautiful image. This is a ring-billed gull flying over the near the along the in , Iowa.

About this time every year the # of gulls around the in , Iowa, increases dramatically. I think they're feeding on gizzard shad which often inhabit the oxygenated waters downstream of dams. Young & yearling gizzard shad are susceptible to fluctuating water temperatures & the gulls may be timing their arrival to the spring shad die-off.

A remarkable number of eagles on the between & this past winter. A friend counted 48 along a 7 mile stretch of the river & the . On Monday I observed 10 in stand of 5-7 trees. I think this one👇, taken from the paved trail, may be the closest I've been to a bald eagle.

The city of , Iowa, as well as my hometown of have begun devoting large portion of public land to prairie restoration. The restored portions of City Park in Iowa City played host to an enormous mass bloom of prairie coneflowers aka yellow coneflowers (Ratibida pinnata) which is one of my absolute favorites👍.
