Something's broken in the #opensource world if a developer ponders if it might have been the biggest mistake in his life to make his #project, #corejs in this case, #oss. We need better #financing models and #funding. It's not all about #money, but it cannot run without either.
Thanks @vsaw for making me aware of this story via his post

Or read directly the developer's post (the story's a hard one, but recommended nevertheless): https://github.com/zloirock/core-js/blob/master/docs/2023-02-14-so-whats-next.md

@kkarhan Personally I just think that using #BSD, #MIT or #X11 licenses is a good way to end up like #MINIX (used for pervasive #proprietary malware) or #CoreJS (no money & used as a pillar of the corpo-backed ecosystem), but strictly-speaking they cover all of the four #FreeSoftware freedoms so they're Free Software as far as I'm concerned (not #copyleft but that's a distinct thing).
CC-BY-NC-SA does have restrictions that mean the four freedoms aren't intact, so it's something else.

The modern webs frontend stacks backbone library #corejs is asking for recognition and a proper future proof funding approach by the companies that build upon it

@binder In this particular case it wasn't quite nearly as much and it was shouldering on a degree dutifulness that was simply self-destructive.
But it wouldn't have gained such a reach (and without other contributors) if corposcum had been forbidden from integrating it in their own tools without contributing back (effectively no one used #CoreJS directly).
Also, #CC and #PublicDomain release tend to be understood as such by those doing them.

@jollyrogue @benjaminhollon @RL_Dane @cobra @alcinnz @dheadshot Yeah, it does limit your project to single-person or cathedral efforts.
Although for some projects that's acceptable, since that's basically all they have anyway until they burn out like #CoreJS.
I do think businesses should simply adapt to using GPL dependencies & give up on the frankly unhealthy models that depend on the ability to sell & release only proprietary programs.
@syntaxseed
Reads article. Hmm.. "Free open-source software is fundamentally broken." Really?
Checks license.... "MIT license." You see, there is the problem. #FreeSoftware is not broken, the problem is that #CoreJS is NOT free software, it is merely #OpenSource
Now we know why you must #GPL or GTFO. GPL is the only free #SoftwareLicense that protects you from EXACTLY the kind of exploitation that this poor guy has experienced -- his code used on 52% of the top 1000 websites, all that for practically no pay. That is exploitation.
@fsf needs to know about this as an example of why you should not use the MIT license. Not much they can do about it, except maybe try to convince the guy to re-license under the GPL.

「 Developers love to use free open-source software - it’s free and works great, they are not interested in that many and many thousands of hours of development, and real people with their own problems and needs are behind it. They consider any mention of this as an invasion of their personal space or even a personal affront. For them, these are just gears that should automatically change without any noise and their participation 」

Issues with #FOSS funding models aside, I can't imagine killing someone and maiming another, using scare quotes when calling them "victims", and then writing about it without expressing any sympathy for the girls or their families. Even if I wasn't at fault and believed the punishment was unjust.
Am I the only one bothered by this? #corejs

If you care about #OpenSource or Internet infrastructure, zloirock (Denis Pushkarev)'s post about #corejs is a must-read:

Disclaimer: zloirock's story seems reasonable and plausible (and sad and crazy-making), but I don't have direct personal knowledge or experience in the matter. Caveat lector.

On the other hand, it turns out the author of #corejs makes excuses for the invasion of Ukraine 😬
