This month, revisited friends dad's service, as one key mystery remained - when did he and his fellow officers get to Rio de Janeiro? Family photo has them in their whites in a bar with a bevy of Brazilian beauties!
Found HMS Corinthinan sailed from Pointe-Noir (French Congo) on 1st Dec and docked 14-31st '42 on Xmas leave!! Back Freetown 9th Jan '43

80 years ago would see more South Atlantic operations.
On 14/Mar/43 HMS Corinthian helped by the destroyers Boreas, Petunia and Crocus rescued 1499 survivors from RMS Empress of Canada sunk that same day by the Italian submarine Leonardo Da Vinci. The survivors, who had to endure exposure and vicious shark attacks, were taken to Freetown. 393 people - mostly Italian PoW - died.

1942 also saw Corinthian involved in passenger & crew rescue operations for MS Shanristan in July and the Duchesss of Atholl in October operating out of Gibraltar and Freetown.
Larger and longer operations were to be found in '43....

Tracked HMS Corinthian in WW2 via excellent naval-history.net/
Found: 5 named convoys they escorted out of Clyde or on return from Gibraltar in '41 and '42 plus W.Patrol.
Tip: site has multiple areas e.g. organisation of Royal Navy and databases with good site search. Look in:
(a) 1000 warship service histories;
(b) Day by Day operations from Admiralty War Diaries (detailed 4Q39-1Q42, outline 2Q42-2Q45);
(c) Convoy Escort movements.
