"#Britain is asset rich. National wealth – a mix of property, business, financial and state assets – stands at almost seven times the size of the #economy. That is double the level of the 1970s.

This has not come about as a result of investment and productivity growth. Instead, much of this private-wealth mountain is unearned – the product of windfall gains, resulting from state-driven asset #inflation, the mass sell-off of former public and commonly held assets (from land to industries) and the #exploitation of #corporate power. As philosopher and civil servant John Stuart Mill quipped during the #Industrial #Revolution, it’s “getting rich while asleep”.

This has widened the #wealth gap. The top tenth of Britons now holds nearly half of the #UK’s private wealth. The poorest half’s share, meanwhile, has never exceeded one-tenth.

As a former #US supreme court justice Louis Brandeis famously declared – a century ago – it was possible, in the US, to have either democracy or great wealth concentrated in the hands of a few – but not both.

Britain today badly fails Brandeis’s #democracy test. Yet, the Labour party’s leaders have no declared plans – at least, as yet – to close this gap."

"Though that may be true, critics say, rent control could hurt millions of people, including some who supplement their retirement with rental income.

"Among 49.5 million rental units, nearly 46% are small rental properties of one to four units, the National Association of Realtors said. More than 70% of those are owned by individuals, or mom-and-pop landlords. About 70% are also managed by them.

"'Cost of rental housing is expensive,' Geno said. 'If they can’t pass on expenses they don’t control, many owners will be upside down.'"

"Many mom-and-pop landlords were forced into forbearance during the 1½-year pandemic-related rent moratorium that allowed tenants to forgo rent payments without fear of eviction. Some even had to sell their properties and defer maintenance on their rentals."

And then corporations bought them up, tore down or gutted the places, then created condos or high-rent housing out of the reach of most people! Creating affordable housing would be great, but it takes time. And judging by the number of homeless and those seeking climate change and political asylum, this problem needs to be solved sooner than later!

Journalism seems to be separate now from what we call 'the press' and is undertaken by individuals, willing to risk their health and financial well being to dig into what's really happening.
Most of the #journalism is ignored until a corporation sees a way to make money from it, then it gets put on blast.
By then, it's been carefully reframed to ensure it doesn't actually result in any substantive discourse or active change.
And then #corporate moves to the next story to interpret for the benefit of #profits

@ArtseaGardener I've always questioned the notion we were supposed to kill plants that are willing to grow while killing ourselves trying to keep alive plants that no longer thrive in the local environment. Yes, we need to avoid wiping out expanses of #NativePlants in favor or growing #corporate crops or building more corporate warehouses and climate-killing roads. But that doesn't mean we should remove nonnative plants that just might be the food that displaced insects and animals will need as they adapt to the climate #capitalism has wrought.

Contemplating the idea that in a few hundred or thousand of years the #future us may look on this time of #data #liberty that this time may be compared to the ancient experiments with #democracy #republic and #selfgovernment which the #greek and #roman peoples did.
