I spoke to @jess about being a musician on the . She reminded me of something I used to really stress to people when talking about the distinction between and : on the latter, if you're trying to promote yourself, you will get drowned out. Even if you pay. Because there's always someone spending more money to goose the algorithm in their favor.

There are problems on the fedi but fighting the privilege of moneyed interest ain't one of them

+@atomicpoet I think has taken advantage of 2 of Maslow's psychological needs, Belonging & Self Esteem. Advertising has been manipulating these with appeals for years.
Folks what to belong to a group (One of the Crowd) & Esteem (Stand Out from the Crowd).
So they join Bird, Face, Tik, or some other media flavour to belong. Then they shout out to the void Look-at-Me to feel self-worth.
This is psychologically damaging addictive behaviour, that runs counter to engagement.

has conditioned a lot of us. People have become addicted to conflict. Conflict can be a marketing, control and money-making tool. When you step back from corporate Social Media you realise that. When we normalise toxic environments and navigate through them every day we adapt to toxicity. Similar stuff happens in the real world when people stay in toxic jobs or relationships. Often they only realise how toxic it was when they left the relationship or job.
