WOW! 😍 Check out this stunning #Sphagnum moss which is colonising new bog pools created by rewetting at our 2021 #peatland #restoration site. Sphagnum is very important for fostering peat formation in blanket bogs and can absorb up to 20 times its weight in water! I'm looing forward to seeing this vegetation develop at our newer sites currently under restoration management.

I had an exciting planning day at #Corrour this week with Daniele & Pat from the British Dragonfly Society Scotland. We had glorious weather while discussing opportunities for creating conservation bog pools to buffer the rare Azure Hawker #dragonfly (Aeshna caerulea) from drought impacts due to climate change.

Looks good. Can you expand a bit for those of us not familiar with how this is done, please?
I'm reading it as the steep bare cuts with exposed peat (the hags?) have been smoothed to make the surface more undulating. And the rewetting was that done deliberately? Why would that not take care of itself in a place like Corrour?

Peat hag reprofiling in action at #Corrour by our #peatland #restoration contractor Barker & Bland. Donor turves are carefully extracted to cover badly eroded areas of bare peat. We've started restoring a brand new area of 43 ha while waiting for the snow to clear from the high ground at the larger project site.

Last night was the first Christmas Party I’ve been to since 2019, and the first for me since joining the team at #Corrour. I’m so fortunate to work with such an incredible bunch of people delivering nature recovery at scale 🤩

Temperatures are now consistently well below zero up at 700m altitude, but #peatland #restoration contractor Barker & Bland continues to make excellent progress at #Corrour!
