Every year, the cottonwood trees around my house are pretty overwhelming.

The cottonwood trees start blowing their seeds a couple of days ago but it’s really coming down today. Video wouldn’t do it justice. The seeds look like light sparse snowflakes riding on air. Drifts are forming and there will be tiny seedlings everywhere by fall.
This is probably the type of cottonwood we have locally:

Without a size reference It's often hard to visualize how big some of Cottonwood trees really are. These two Canada Geese are trying to land on a growth halfway up a tree - although it was too small to provide footing for more than one of them.

It is cold and the snow is deep in Minnesota this week.
To the right of the #cottonwood that thinks it’s an oak tree is a long #prairie planting on the lakes edge. I intended to some spring overseeding on this visit. Nope. Not going to happen.

“But now, because Chinook, steelhead and trout are listed under the Endangered Species Act, the Bonneville Power Administration is trying to rebuild #floodplains using revenue from electricity generation.
With help from the #nonprofit Trout Unlimited, Wilson won a $1.2 million BPA grant to restore his three-quarter mile stretch of river.
In the summer of 2022, crews placed 475 trees, many complete with massive root wads, in the channel to slow water down and spread it out. They built 54 artificial #beaver dams to hold water in the floodplain and create lots of little stillwater pools. And they planted #cottonwood, #willow and #alder trees for shade.”

Over and over these idiots do exactly the same thing planting non-native trees that can't deal with the temperature fluctuations because they are cheap and the developers don't care that they'll die.
