Raising the rate of capital gains tax closer to that on income while restoring the annual exemption to the level of a couple of years back would increase yield while reducing the workload on #hmrc who have to administer it all . It would also hit the wealthy significantly - the ones who find ways of taking their income as capital gains. Add some more bands to #counciltax at the top end and there might be some genuine redistribution!

Worth noting that both #counciltax and #capitalgainstax have ended up being in part a #wealthtax on those of modest means while being designed not to affect the really wealthy at all significantly. Getting rid of inflation indexation on capital gains and then reducing the annual exemption has had that effect - anyone who makes the mistake of holding shares for more than a year or so can expect to be caught by #capitalgainstax even if all that has happened is general inflation!

That is certainly my impression. #Westminster has a particularly favourable #counciltax settlement - and has had so for over thirty years - as indeed has #wandsworth where I live. The outgoing administrations had left rather a lot of cash reserves when they were replaced unexpectedly last May. This has given some headroom for local initiatives. Not sue about Sustrans so cannot answer.

#Westminster has been rather well funded historically by #centralgovernment since the days of the dreadful #LadyPorter so not really analogous. #TransportforLondon has had a really poor deal - agreed to by the previous #mayorofLondon #BorisJohnson - but is being funded by a sharp rise in the #precept for #counciltax levied across #London. #Devolution to #London considerable but has come at rather a stiff price.

Cash-strapped Kent County Council have imposed a blanket #counciltax increase of 5%, on top of that local town councils put their own slice.

There's the council tax bill dropped on the mat, ach well, if we didn't pay it we'd have potholes decimating every road, services slashed to the bone and refuge collectors desperately wanting to reduce collection to once a month.
