The current Iowa legislature is taking away all freedoms "to protect children." But as mental health counselors, we know they are causing irreparable harm to children by denying them to be who they are, or see themselves in a book, or be safe from gun violence, or have their public schools funded, etc. Part of me wants to move to a blue state, a state where the SAIGE community is protected, diversity is celebrated, reproductive healthcare is safe and legal. Part of me wants to stay and fight. My husband asked me the other day if we should move...yes but no. On a less severe note, after about a month of bronchitis, I'm realizing what it means to be in an industry without sick leave.

So honored to be here. Introduction post. I am a graduate student in my last semester so I am completing my final internship and hope to graduate in May with my tLMHC. A little about me: My first call to counseling happened after my daughter died at birth and I felt so alone. I knew that I wanted to work with those grieving and make sure no one ever felt that. Without a college degree, and 2 young ones, life happened. Then I was diagnosed with an autoimmune at 40. I decided to go back to online school and complete my BS in Human Services while I stabilized. I graduated at 45 and was able to walk across the stage. Health took a turn, life took another, and pandemic. I decided it would be a great time to get my MS in CMHC. It has been a challenge at times to balance my health and this new path but so rewarding. During practicum, I counseled children and that was all they wrote and haven't looked back. I hope to stay in the area and work with kiddos who live in rural Iowa. Thank you for the invite and I look forward to knowing all of you.

I started my final internship today and have 4 months until I graduate with my MS in clinical mental health counseling. At 52, and chronically ill, and in a pandemic - I was not sure I could complete this. I love what I do, and am so excited to be back.
