AAAS: "Imaging reveals Ben Franklin's anticounterfeiting secrets." Franklin is responsible for many inventions, including lightning rods + bifocals. But he was also pioneered paper money + was picked by Pennsylvnia to produce this currency. Atomic-level imaging + spectroscopy now reveal previously unappreciated safeguards built into these bills. One was the use of a natural graphite-based ink, which was distinguishable from the bone and vegetable-oil inks used by counterfeiters. "Franklin also incorporated colored fibers and tiny crystals into the bills, making them difficult to reproduce and more durable, the researchers report this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences." To this day, some of Franklin's techniques may still be found in U.S. money, including the $100 bills that bear his likeness. I've just added Giuseppe Morello's #AtlantaPrison file to the #MafiaHistory website. #Morello was the U.S. #Mafia boss of bosses at the time of his 1910 #counterfeiting conviction. An original sentence of 25 years was commuted to 15 and reduced to about 10 for good behavior. During the 121 months he was behind bars, hundreds of pages - relating to family, letters, visitors, health, legal appeals, criminal activity, etc. - went into the file.
