Countess Markievicz died on 15 July 1927 in Dublin. A founding member of Fianna Éireann, Cumann na mBan and the Irish Citizen Army, she took part in the Easter Rising in 1916. She was sentenced to death, commuted to life imprisonment on the grounds of her sex. She was the first woman elected to the UK House of Commons. She was elected Minister for Labour in the First Dáil, becoming the first female cabinet minister in Europe.

On 2nd December 1920 Countess Markievicz was charged with conspiring to ‘organise and promote’ Fianna Éireann for the purposes of ‘committing murders of military and police; the drilling of men; the carrying and using arms; and the training of recruits for the Irish Volunteers’. 1/2
