Emotionally difficult evening watching the #LyraMcKee film in #CoventryCathedral tonight, followed by a Q&A with members of her family and others.

I had a very small walk-on role in her life, as Head of Editorial at #Headliners, the youth #journalism charity she was a member of as a teenager.

Wednesday’s #ImageOfTheDay. Today is #HolyInnocentsDay. The 16th century #Coventry Carol commemorates the Massacre of the Innocents, Herod’s slaughter of male infants in Bethlehem under the age of two after the birth of Jesus. The lullaby is sung by the children’s mothers. These are the ruins of #CoventryCathedral. The carol was sung here at a BBC broadcast at #Christmas 1940, a few weeks after the city was bombed by the Luftwaffe.

When you reach the altar and look back towards the south, now you see detail and colour and a more interesting view, as the side coloured windows face the altar, not the congregation. The side chapels are more intimate and human scaled, and with more interesting details, but the nave itself with the spindly columns and acres of blank wall leaves me cold.

I'm prepared for church architects to come for me at this point. Knock yourself out.

Epstein’s “Ecce Homo” was carved in 1934-5 & stands in the ruins of the old #CoventryCathedral. In St John’s Gospel, it is with the words “Behold the Man” that Pilate presents Jesus to the crowd prior to his crucifixion. “Although his hands are held by a rope, the arms across the chest are defiant, the jaw strong, and the eyes look beyond the horizon of this world. This is an undefeated Christ, do the world what it may” (R Harries).

#MonochromeMonday. The south nave aisle of the new #CoventryCathedral, completed in 1962. It shows the Harrison & Harrison organ and one of Ralph Beyer’s Tablets of the Word. Today is the anniversary of the Luftwaffe raids that destroyed #Coventry’s medieval Cathedral of St Michael on 14 November 1940.

#Imageoftheday on Monday: the ruined #coventrycathedral. On the night of 14 November 1940 #coventry sustained heavy Luftwaffe raids (“Operation Moonlight Sonata”) that destroyed the medieval Cathedral of St Michael and much of the historic city. The ruins have since stood as a memorial to “war and the pity of war” committed to reconciliation & peace. The famous charred cross was set up in the sanctuary with the words “Father forgive” inscribed on the altar.
