Three commodity groups are hoping to double the where are planted by 2030 through their Farmers For Soil Health program. Signups opened last month for both first-time adopters and farmers already committed to the practice, with participants receiving cost-share payments and technical guidance.

All garlic beds are harvested. One of them is now weeded, straightened, and seeded with buckwheat. Seven more to go.

I was planning my cover crop plan for when I’m done my garlic harvest (way late this year) and I came across this gem of a resource guide from NSOGA and ACORN. It’s specifically oriented towards organic and gives suggestion for integrating into no-till practices. It was so helpful I thought I’d share it. nsefp.ca/wp-content/uploads/20

@FantasticalEconomics I’m in awe at the Illinois 72 car pile up on I55 Monday. Because of dust. And driving in blinding conditions.
Can we require Illinois farmers to plant now? And enforce rules on land disturbance during construction? Or are we just gonna have an eastern dust bowl?

@irolita with a yard that big you could fence into quarters. Grow like and mix with other quick growing plants such as . If you planted three sections at the same time and selected the right mix for growth, you could rotate most of the way through summer. The forth and first section would be planted after the first was eaten up.

No wonder the badgers are raking up my soil. The earthworms are huge this year after their winter green manure feeds. I had three pairs of robins watching on hoping for a worm feast. What a difference a month makes, from the end of December to the end of January.

@graftandspur Yes, ryegrass will over winter here. So far mustard has been the next hardiest. I was hoping the oats would over winter with the rye but they haven’t.

I grow a diverse cover crop mix from Sept and let their biomass cover the ground and feed the soil biology.

As it’s too warm for Jan some clover and phacelia may start to come through now. The only plants I have growing at the moment are the perennials, teasel, ryegrass and the bulbs.

January & February are going to drag.

My green manures have mostly been frost killed so I’ve marked out the beds for 2023 (75 cm wide with a 25 cm path in between). Bed lengths will vary on the plot between 5 & 8m.

Three beds are set aside for growing Yacon as a replant perennial. I’ll have another 15 beds to play around with.

Green manures were growing well into the first week of December. 10 nights of freezing temperatures (-4°C to -9°C) have knocked them back. Photographed after today’s thaw.

@justjessicaok not just Midwest . Just about everywhere that “modern” agriculture is practiced. To the extent possible, we need to switch to with and practices which build soil and soil health rather than erode it.

Frosts this week have wilted the green manures on my plot but not much of a hard frost. More -4/-5°C night time temperatures are forecast.

@pascale It’s amazing to see how it improves the soil isn’t it? What cover crops did you opt for? Anything you’d recommend in particular? I’d recommend ryegrass, the soil was wonderful.

I over wintered cover crops for the first time last year and the soil was absolutely gorgeous this year. I had no problems in the heat this summer or with the rainfall this autumn.
