A song that is a cover version

Maaaan, this took me all day. Johnny Cash? Brilliant but too easy? Ryan Adams' "Wonderwall"? Brilliant but too cheesy.

Any cover version of Joy Division's "Ceremony"? I'd have accidentally written an essay about that song.

So, I settled on Tocotronic covering Turbonegro.

And I don't want to shit on Turbonegro too much but their fans used to be a right ol' nuisance in my youth. All this young adult dudes posturing, the "hardness", the manliness fetish.

So much, it probably escaped most of them that "Sailor Man" is quite a queer song.

And along come Tocotronic. A bunch of soft German indie boys, and they turn it into a Schlager song.

Now, me trying to explain Schlager would take ages but there IS an alteration of that style of music that used to be dark, progressive, with nuance and longing....a LOT of longing.

I was excited to see that JUNO has posted another cover today, even more so when I listened to it. Her take on “Lua”, the Bright Eyes song from 2004, is again a very stripped-down version with mainly one guitar and two voices, later a piano sneaking in to make the whole thing even more captivating.
