Kids are dying of strep throat this year, but you've not heard about it. Why is that?
I'm old enough to remember when we *would not talk about cancer* in the Midwest.
Some dramedy movie in the nineties, I think, played this for laughs. Heartland woman visits the East Coast and is visibly staggered at the casual cancer talk.
That sort of culture shock is what I'm trying to provoke with #AirborneAIDS and #CovidAIDS.
Which are all the rage on Twitter, btw.
Okay, but just because we can get these, alright, *Acquire* these vulnerabilities ...
... in our bodies' disease-fighting sys-, alright, *Immune* systems ...
... which become less capable, alright, more *Deficient* ...
... all of which makes for a cluster, alright, a *Syndrome* of, yes, I already SAID vulnerabilities ...
... that doesn't mean it's *AIDS* ...
Why not?!
Because we're NOT GAY, okay!?

Until last night, virtually every Covid post I've seen here that contained a reference or comparison to HIV/AIDS was coming from Twitter (bird.makeup) ... through @Charlotteshhhh's account.
I know because I tried to spot and boost every one of them.
Now it looks like the API that made tweets viewable here has been pulled.
So that'll be interesting to watch.

They covered up germ warfare experiments.
They covered up asbestos.
They covered up leaded paint.
They covered up leaded fuel.
They covered up smoking.
They covered up AIDS.
They covered up climate change.
And they're covering up covid.

"They'd tell us if it was as bad as you say."
Don't make me laugh. They didn't tell us about smoking, asbestos, AIDS, lead paint, or pretty much any other noxious thing you could name.
It all came from below, from the people, and from unions.

Enumerating the parts here.
(1) "If the entire infected population is affected by immune deficiency ..." (@mathew1927)
(2) As an example: "... a good chunk of people still somehow think the only people catching SARS-CoV-2 are the unvaxxed." (@PacificNic)
Any other larger parts then?
(1) The facts, if true, and (2) the stage they have play out on.
-
Besides (3), the unknown?

I started trying to provoke people at the beginning of the month. It's a small sample size I have to work with, but, I thought the response was strangely muted. Favorites instead of boosts. Some from people whom I'd have allowed to correct me, if they'd seen fit.
I found a couple of barely used hashtags, #AirborneAIDS and #CovidAIDS, and put them to work.
So I've laid down my markers. On Mastodon, anyway. Apparently plenty of folks were already on those hashtags on Twitter.
If it's not that stereotypical caricature of Southern racism, it's not racist.
If it doesn't check all the boxes of classic WWII Nazism, it's not fascist.
If it's not unwarranted or pointless from the perspective of religious adults, it's not abuse.
-
And so,
if it's not tainted by the cruelty of homophobic stigma,
we can't say it's an acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
-
Right?

For all the silence and denial around AIDS in the 80's, when the news finally broke was anybody as cravenly mealy-mouthed about it as this?
(h/t @currentbias)
"Studies have shown that repeat infections can increase the risk of long-term health effects including long COVID and organ failure.
'If you're talking about sort of risks of long COVID development, absolutely, we need to do a little bit more work there,' Wolfe said."

Starting to see more direct Covid/HIV/AIDS comparisons in my timeline now.
Had a conversation the other day with the first person (afaik) on Mastodon to hashtag #AirborneAIDS.
And learned that over on Twitter they've been using that tag and the HIV comparison since last year. Though a lot more so recently.
Which, granted, they're in a bigger conference than the fediverse. Given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow, and all that.
Anyway, #CovidAIDS #Covid19 #Covid #LongCovid
#airborneaids #covidaids #COVID19 #COVID #LongCovid
The fact that #CovidAIDS is a thing and the CDC is not yelling it from the rooftops is scary by itself. The current healthcare infrastructure was inadequate before all this.
All the more reasons to mask up and adopt every measure available to protect ourselves and the people near us.

Can we now officially start to say that "Covid is more like HIV than the flu"?? I feel like that's a simple phrase that helps to get the point across.
German Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach: “It is worrying what we observe in people who have had several corona infections. Studies now show very clearly that those affected often have to deal with an incurable immune deficiency”
