I think it’s important to keep sharing this kind of anecdote, esp when it seems like everyone is desperately embracing the “being over” nonsense.

Over the past month: many more ppl wearing masks on . Including MTA staff. Good; but why are we STILL wearing cloth masks in 2023???? 😟

Dispatch from — In the last 48 hrs, I’ve seen 4 ambulances parked outside residential buildings/houses. In 2 instances, they were loading people in on stretchers.

On the bus: out of ~25 passengers, at least 5 had loud, wet coughs and/or sniffling loudly. That sounds like 20% of people out in public w/active illnesses to me!

Dispatch from — Watching the New York channel, and the meteorologist is actively coughing while trying to give the forecast. Her eyes are glassy and she may be a little pale (hard to tell w/ makeup and studio lights).

You can tell she’s trying to keep going through her spiel, but it’s not proving to be a very easy task.

Completely anecdotal:

In January (~5 months after having had for the first & only time) I began experiencing nerve pain on very the surface of my skin. Localized, almost like one "patch" of skin on my thigh, upper arm, or forearm was irritated.

It felt akin to pins & needles, but manifested more in terms of sensitivity than numbness. Not debilitating, but uncomfortable and annoying.

Even the slightest touch (e.g. wearing clothes) hurt.

Dispatch from — I was walking a client’s dog today when I had a strange interaction with someone I see often. She’s always maskless.

We said hi, our dogs said hi. Pause. Then she says, staring at my :

“Are you feeling under the weather or…?”

I let a long moment pass before simply replying, “Nope!”

She quickly followed with, “Sorry, that was rude.” I assured her the is comfortable!

WHEN and WHY did common courtesies like coughing/sneezing into your elbow, NOT leaving the house when you’re sick, etc. FLY out the window?!

Felt dystopian to see a advertisement for a so-called low cost treatment when, in reality, you’re probably going to have to pay *someone* to give it to you.

Dispatch from — Yesterday I went to the Brooklyn Museum to see their excellent exhibit before it closes next weekend. Little mask wearing; but the masks I did see were mostly and even some respirators!

High ceilings, large rooms, & many air vents (can only hope was working well!) allowed the reading to stay below 2000 ppm.

Went to the gym in an , as always, to lift some weights. Much more crowded than usual. Several visibly sick people. was at 2875 ppm. Two other people wearing masks—one worn properly, one cloth fully under the nose 🤦🏼‍♀️ Ew.

Dispatch from — Streets seem emptier than usual, particularly around lunchtime. The couple school dismissals I’ve seen are smaller/less raucous (fewer kids). I suspect many are at home.

Midday A/C trains have been significantly emptier, and still not many masked. There may be fewer people who are walking around sick (coughing) in public, though!

My sister texted me this tonight. One of her best friends got a negative PCR result, but a positive after their mom was confirmed PCR positive.

Another anecdote to suggest that tests aren’t picking up on as well, maybe? maybe? Fucking awesome /s

Dispatch from — More people out & about compared to beginning of this week. More kids on playgrounds, but also more kids WITH masks at school dismissals (surgical mostly, but better than nothing I suppose).

Midday C train has been packed with half+ maskless. Front/back cars tend to have fewer people (consistently) & more masked (inconsistently).

Dispatch from — out of the house for a total of 4 hours today, and I’ve seen three ambulances with lights on (parked, attending to people) and two speeding past with lights and sirens. Streets seem emptier than usual, even during the usual school-dismissal-rush between 2:30 and 4 PM.
