Walking with Stella today, we ran across coyote scat. Stella was fascinated - a 40 minute walk barely covered a mile.
There has been an uptick in sightings of coyotes in the neighborhood, so this wasn’t surprising. A week ago, we listened to a joyous - and raucous - bark/yip fest on the slopes of the nearby middle school hillside. It was a sizable pack, and the tempo, pitch and volume all increased together for a minute or two.
At 1 in the afternoon. Not at night, when they’re usually audible.
Given the time of year, and the fact it was a group howl, it likely was a celebration of pups old enough to leave the pack and head off on their own.
I was reminded of this August article in the LA times about a recent study that links the arrival of humans in Southern California 13,000 years ago and the disappearance of most mammals.
When we humans change the climate a second time and most species die off, the coyote will likely survive yet again.

Coyotes play a crucial role in maintaining the health of the ecosystem. Hunting at sunrise is an advantageous strategy as their acute senses allow them to capitalize on the low light conditions when their prey are most active. Bosque Del Apache

Little Kasper was having a sleepover with his friend from school, when he saw an opportunity to have some fun. He wasn't expecting his friend to say something so embarrassing in his sleep though... Turns out Kasper wasn't the first one to enjoy those warm depths. 💕

We might have fewer strays in the future... haven't ever seen coyotes around our house before. (We saw one once when we were out walking a few years ago). Looks healthier than most I see around L.A.

Una tipica trama di un vecchio film western trasportata nelle campagne dell'Ungheria dei nostri giorni.
Violento, sempre al limite del kitsch, mantiene però un certo fascino.

I found some sheets of sepia paper and some Koh I-noor colour pencils which I had stuffed away for quite some time and finally found the courage to try them out. I know the proportions are a bit off.. ^^* #coyote #yote #art #furryart #furry

Incentivizing the killing of New York’s #wildlife is both cruel and scientifically unsound as a management tool. As practicing NYS veternarian Eileen Jefferson recently wrote in an op-ed, "NYS DEC’s science-based conclusion is that random removal of coyotes does not reduce #coyote populations, increase #deer populations, or prevent livestock predation."

#coyote notes while I’m working on jelly: this is mom, I can tell because she’s the one who absolutely sprawls. She saw me open the window to get this pic but decided it was fine. The equines don’t mind her at all.
Later two of the kids appeared. They’re smaller and obviously younger, and they’re fascinated/horrified by Miss D. She’s happily grazing down by the road, keeping both eyes on the puppies. Samwise is up in the terraces, eating the corn, staring straight at them too.
Good work, team!
Guess I should add to #AirborneAugust as well x3 a lovely pic @blue did for me a few years ago. A nice round shape and floaty some? The only thing better would be a bigger tank <3 #inflation #inflatable #helium #balloonie #balloon #coyote #FurryArt #RubberFur #LatexFur #BalloonFur

Today’s #coyote and #equine update:
After Samwise broke himself and Miss D out and didn’t founder, I decided they could stay out in the meadow for a while. I feed them a little snack of diet pellets and sunflower seeds three times a day - Miss D bellows at me if I forget. But otherwise, the gate is open and they wander in and out of their paddock at will.
They’re doing a very sensible job of walking around eating lots of different stuff, not just eating the green spots down to dirt. They’re very happy. And they’re also decent anti-coyote guards.
I’ve asked them, with lots of gesturing and words they both know, a couple of times now to guard the #chickens and run the coyotes off. Donkeys are supposed to be guard animals, and I know Miss D won’t take shit from any canine. And maybe it’s working! Today I walked into the bathroom a second too late to see *what* Miss D was chasing into the big cypress tree, but she was gonna bite its ass if it slowed down. Sometimes the #donkey shoves his way into there to scratch himself or nap, but he’d kick her in the teeth for that, so I’m pretty sure it was an uppity coyote pup. No chickens! Y’all gotta move out! There’s plenty of timberland up the hill behind us, they’ll be ok.
I found a couple of poopy eggs, so I walked them down to the coyote corner. I don’t mind sharing my imperfect eggs - I used to compost them but she’d just dig them out. When I turned around to walk back to the garden, Nightlight had bravely followed me down. She was very clearly feeling at least three things at once: scared to come this close to the coyotes’ territory, mad about being scared about them, and protective toward me. She was all poofed out, stiff tailed, glaring molten gold fury at me - and if we’d stayed a few minutes longer, she would’ve peed to mark her territory. I’ve seen her do it before! My little tiger, please don’t taunt the direwolves. I took her back home and made sure she came in.

A little peace for your (and my) day. I love gardening and plants a ton, and wish I could have a big garden to work in. Maybe I should focus on pretty plants instead of tomatoes or peppers next year. But in any case. <3

Pups that can chase and wrestle are pups that can catch dumb prey. So begins my seasonal #coyote vigil!
The #chickens hang out in the fenced garden during the day, but for tldr reasons, their coop is just outside the garden in the meadow. I have to be outside to supervise around dusk, or that dipshit Ninja will squeeze her way through the gate bottom, and then Bey has to fly out to defend her, and it all goes to shit. But if I’m out there playing traffic cop, I can keep them near the fence and headed to the coop.
Except tonight when we headed out into the meadow, before I managed to convince the first five to go to bed, the red pup appeared in the far corner. They just stood there, oozing “I’m just a hungry urchin, please may i have a chicken” vibes as hard as they could. No! No you may not!
The roosters started tittering. The cat leapt up on a fence post to stare fixedly at the coyote. The hens, spooked by the boys, began to wonder if maybe they should scatter.
I switched gears instantly and herded them back inside the garden. Everybody relaxed.
I went back to the gate and watched the young coyote until they left. They stared longingly for a few more seconds, then spun to dive into the shadows under a medium sized cypress, only to immediately bounce off of (presumably) the sibling hiding just out of my sight. The red one caromed off toward another trail and disappeared.
When it got a little darker, and the chickens assembled at the gate again, we went back out and I managed to get all 9* of them in and latched before anyone changed their mind. No coyote the second trip out, but neither the cat nor I lingered.
* there are currently three more social-misfit chickens sleeping in the basement. One day I hope to lock all twelve peacefully in the same coop. Hashtag goals!
