Not much is in bloom in an Oregon garden in January, but coyote bush (Baccharis pilularis) is an enthusiastic exception. This male plant has been flowering for several weeks.

Coyite bush is a large shrub -- heights of 12 ft/3.5 m or more are common -- and is native to Oregon, California, and Baja California.

Our native Coyote Bush is past its seasonal prime due to hard frosts and rains, but earlier in the fall it nourishes an astounding variety of insect pollinators (never can get a pic of the tiny iridescent green sweat bees!) and occasionally a praying mantis will hang out for the buffet.
