Dave's going down for sleep or something. He'll even put on his mask, even though it starts leaking after about an hour of wear. He got a nag text about not using the thing enough. Ok, Dave, let's do this thing!

A respiratory therapist just dropped off my new machine. She showed me how to use it, and adjusted the mask and settings for best results.

My journey is about to start, this little beauty was delivered this morning. With an AHI of 72 it's got it's work cut out for it!

@GossiTheDog huge difference. Even if not for the health/life saving aspect, you sleep so much more effectively. I actually don’t get sleepy in the afternoon when I wore it the night before.

The caveat/tradeoff is that it will likely be incredibly annoying at first and hard to get used to. Mask choice is everything, so prepare to invest some time finding one which works for you

Oh that's right, I ended up removing the mask and turning my device off around 2:00am Tuesday night because my nose was blocked and I couldn't breath. I think I'll need to look into a full face mask for when I'm sick and can't breath through my nose.

Morning ruminations:
1) can only help so much. When sleep is at a premium, a can only guarantee you won't wake up your partner, snoring in their ear.
2) I am proud to say I am from the same town as 🏳️‍🌈 I read part of his book; up to the part where my old Golden Retriever tried to read it, too. never had a chance.
3) Brain stimulants are one of God's myriad health blessings. His scientific acumen is strong, despite what the far-right Evangelicals will tell you.

An unexpected side-effect of getting sleep with a CPAP machine is that after a week it feels like everyone else's thinking is slowing down as mine speeds up.

The Aponea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) is an average measure of how many times you have a full or partial loss of breath for more than 10 seconds. It’s not hard to imagine this is not a good thing if it occurs too often.

My recent sleep study resulted in a AHI value of 45.1. I knew I was constantly tired, and have been feeling the negative impacts for too long. I would never have imagined that on average I stop breathing for at least 7.5 minutes per HOUR!

Tonight I start trialling a CPAP machine. It will deliver a constant air pressure into my airways to keep them unobstructed. It’s a little intimidating yet at the same time comforting. Once my clinician and I get the numbers dialled in, good quality sleep will return and I won’t feel so horrible all the time.

Some of my symptoms are:
- constantly tired
- fogginess in my thinking by
- mid-afternoon (at best)
- irritability
- overall poor health

The thing about snoring is, I’m asleep. I can’t know how bad it is. If you think your snoring is worsening, or your partner says it is, don’t dismiss it from simply being overweight, stressed, overworked etc. Get to your GP, order a sleep study and follow it through.

day 3: Raised the humidity last night, and it was worth it. Feeling more like I did after the first night. Most nights, for as long as I remember anymore, I've stumbled out of bed because, well, ya gotta get up eventually, but it was always hours before I could remotely call myself actually awake, even with caffeine. Today I was actually *ready* to get moving. I can't remember the last time I could say that.

Day 2: Back to being a little foggy this morning, but then I cut out some of my OTC stuff that I usually take at night; I'm going to make a point of not missing that stuff. Woke up with congestion *and* drainage in the middle of the night, so ended up having to deal with that. And the fog has lifted more easily than it usually does at least, so I'll take that. LOL The mask was a little pinchy at times; depending on how the next few days go, I may or may not consider a different mask.

Good morning all! Started sleeping with an last night, something that falls under the category of ways I never expected to take after my parents. There were a few fits and starts--it's so quiet I wasn't sure it got turned on, having to pee at 1 AM and forgetting to take the thing off by the magnets, so the nose-piece popped off and I had to re-attach it, etc., but over all I think it's making a difference--I'm not quite so brain-fogged as I usually am in the morning. I had to use Culligan water this first night, but I got a couple gallons of distilled water coming in about an hour or so, so I'll be able to use that tonight. CPAPLife

@LunarLioness814 I understand the claustrophobia & just used the nasal pillows for CPAP for a long time which only cover the nostrils. In my case they kept falling out because I twitch at night, but they did work. I still have something that covers only the nose and allows me to sleep on my side.

After hearing that President Joe has (apparently, since at least 2008) and uses a machine, sharing this (5-year-old but eye-opening) NPR story about treatment costs, with/without insurance, sleep apnea insurance patient rip-off, data sharing/privacy concerns:

I've been using a for the entirety of my 50s. I sleep better and no longer have involuntary naps at my desk in the afternoon. My wife appreciates the greatly reduced snoring.

I know people who use one that are even younger. is common, and is not a mark against anyone’s competence or general cognitive abilities. President is wise to treat it. Good for him, good for us.

Imagine if the press treated Biden's use of as a moment to educate the public about a life-saving treatment for a common condition, instead of like 5th graders saying "Ew, he's old!"
But that wouldn't fit the GOP's pre-existing bullshit narrative, so instead we get this.

RT @thedailybeast
A White House spokesperson was forced to admit that President Joe Biden is using a CPAP machine to treat sleep apnea after reporters noticed slight indentations on his face.

@DataDrivenMD I didn’t know this. Good for ! Sleep apnea is not to be messed with; in the early 2010s my husband was having trouble functioning during the day due to the condition. Once correctly diagnosed thru a sleep study he began using a and it was literally life changing.

In conclusion: MSM should be CHEERING Biden for taking the condition seriously & using a remedy (much like Senator John Fetterman when diagnosed with depression). The double standard is glaring.
