California’s newly empowered privacy regulators announced their first case Monday, a probe of the data practices of newer-generation #cars that are often or always connected to the internet.
The #California #Privacy Protection Agency said its enforcement division would review manufacturer’s treatment of data collected from vehicles, including locations, smartphone connections and images from cameras.

The #CPPA is hiring a legal intern.
If you are at least a rising 3L interested in #privacy, policy, and the rulemaking processing, this fall internship might be right for you.
This paid internship is fully remote (within California) and part-time.

AI regulation is coming. What’s Canada’s approach? | BetaKit Podcast
Canada’s Bill C-27, the Digital Charter Implementation Act is currently in second reading
> “Bill C-27 is a three part bill that includes major reform to Canada’s federal private sector privacy law. So, It will repeal and replace the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act [PIPEDA]. The second part of the bill would establish a new tribunal associated with part 1 which is the reform to private sector privacy law. And then, The third part of the bill introduces new regulation specific to artificial intelligence [the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (AIDA)].” - Carole Piovesan, co-founder and managing partner at INQ Law

@mmasnick The new modern privacy laws (basically anything CCPA on, so CA/UT/CT/CO/VA) in the US all have specific carveouts from applicability in supervised research settings governed under codes of conduct. Presumably these carveouts are to protect academic and pharmaceutical etc research. What those codes of conduct entail and which ones will be held to be satisfactory, I don't know yet. Good subject for a guidance paper from an agency like the #CPPA.
