@T @dznz also, under the terms of, for example, the #CPTPPA, 'unlocking' proprietary devices could put someone like me into a legal bind, where I'm circumventing 'Technical Protection Measures', namely anti-user features on consumer devices to protect corporate profits by actively working against the owners of those devices.
@kaffiene of course the #ISDS terms in the #CPTPPA are only part of it - as you point out gov't procurement was horribly biased in favour of #BitTech prior to that, too. That's because bureaucrats want to be seen to be in charge of the biggest budgets/procurements ($ amount) possible as it sets them up for advancement. I've no doubt people create RFPs with conditions effectively ruling out viable local options, because the 'big name' & big $ looks better on their CV.
@kaffiene it's true they weren't buying local, but now they can claim that their bias is justified due to the risk of being sued under the terms of the #CPTPPA - 'obligations under international agreements' is how it's usually termed in the media. Of course, only a few bureaucrats actually seem to understand what's going on.
@kaffiene unfortunately, most people don't know what the #CPTPPA really entails. Sadly, that includes most MPs who voted for it. They think it's an FTA because that's what the media called it, because that's what the US corporate lawyers who wrote its 6000 pages of *restrictions* called it. It's a farce. Here's a bit of an overview: https://davelane.nz/tppa-select-committee-redux-2018-edition
@kaffiene my beef is mostly about how stupid it was for NZ to sign up to the #CPTPPA, and then gov't's painful risk aversion which has, of course, created much bigger liabilities (e.g. like this: https://davelane.nz/mshostage and this https://davelane.nz/explainer-digitech-risks-school-boards among many others)

@kaffiene the big problem is that our Gov't has painted itself into a corner - under the #CPTPPA it can't do anything that might be seen to be benefiting local business at the expense of Big Tech profit margins (about 90%, by the way). If Big Tech thinks they have, they can take a *secret* suit against the NZ Gov't. So gov't, totally risk averse, is actively *preferring* Big Tech to avoid any possible whiff of favouritism for local business.
@aotearoa_ben only problem with Parker is that he was frothing to get Labour to support the #CPTPPA (after the party actively campaigned against it), which is seriously the worst thing Labour could've done for NZ (beyond being useless at any action to mitigate climate catastrophe and achieving greater tax equity via a wealth tax).
@va2lam Labour and National are identical in that they actively support corporate interests over national and constituents' interests. Both are actively avoiding doing anything useful because that would reduce foreign corporate profits and that'd lead to secret lawsuits under the #CPTPPA's ISDS provisions. So we need a gov't that would pull us out of #CPTPPA. @arinbasu1 @dznz @sidawson
And, again, this is almost certainly partly motivated by NZ's stupid participation in the #CPTPPA (not-at-all)Free Trade Agreement. Here's why: https://davelane.nz/tppa-select-committee-redux-2018-edition &, I think, this is key: https://davelane.nz/modern-trade-agreements-and-mega-corporate-end-game
@sidawson @heyrochelle the only way out would be for us to elect a new progressive, anti-corporate gov't that pulls us out of #CPTPPA, the 5-frickin-Eyes, and tells the US corporations to fuck right off. I've vote for them in a heartbeat. Local communities, not (foreign) corporations, are what we need.
@sidawson @heyrochelle Yeah, I'm appalled by this. Our gov'ts (whether National or Labour-led) have progressive sold out our nation to foreign corporate interests. I suppose that's the neoliberal model in a nutshell - put all our eggs into the 'market basket' because 'democracy' is too messy. But now, with both Nat'l & Labour gagging to sign us up for corporate hegemony via #CPTPPA, our national sovereignty has been eroded to the point where we're screwed.
If you're voting in Rotorua, remember that Todd McClay was National's booster for the #TPPA & #CPTPPA after Tim Groser scarpered. He was actively working against NZers' interests- details: https://davelane.nz/tppa (my Select Committee presentation). Similarly, Labour's David Parker is a traitor to NZers by cheerleading for this (not-at-all)#FreeTradeAgreement - that support demonstrates their incredibly poor judgement & that of their gormless parties for believing it.
@thomasbeagle rather than legislate social interaction and speech (not much historical success in that), perhaps the thing to do is what gov'ts don't want to do: focus on the corporations creating the problem with their calculated profit-motivated behaviour. Did the 'Chch Call' have no teeth? Why not push for a pan gov't accord banning corporate 'engagement algorithms'? (it would, of course, lead to secret #ISDS lawsuits under the #CPTPPA, but whatever). @davemosk @stephen @strypey
I'm still wondering why any nation would sign up to the #CPTPPA. https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/493803/cptpp-the-uk-officially-joins-at-meeting-in-auckland So now the clever old UK has joined the rest of us hapless fools, shouldering the yolk of corporate domination. I wonder if any of them remember that the text of the entire agreement was secret & was going to stay that way in perpetuity - even after it was signed. The only reason we know anything about its 6000 pages of 'free trade' limitations, written by corporate lawyers, is thanks to Wikileaks.
To folks aware of the #TPPA & its less-pronouceable alias #CPTPPA that I regularly cite as a real problem for the world & us here in Aotearoa NZ - the #InvestorStateDisputeServices (#ISDS) terms of the not-at-all #FreeTradeAgreement our gov't has signed us up to... this will help you understand how bad it is: https://invidious.snopyta.org/watch?v=xW5dEtjMb-k or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xW5dEtjMb-k #CorporateCoup @strypey @DrCuriosity This also explains our gov'ts *love* for #BigTech & snubbing domestic companies.
#tppa #cptppa #investorstatedisputeservices #isds #freetradeagreement #corporatecoup #bigtech
What I'd love to see for Aotearoa NZ's political landscape is a few parties, with strong commitment to principles of degrowth, social equity, national & indigenous sovereignty, local community over foreign corporate, & benign neglect of business outside of required regulation. Major priority: drop out of #CPTPPA & other #ISDS-enabled limited trade agreements.
@craftygardennz yes, the gov't is generally useless with regard to dealing with corporations. They seldom realise that they have actual real power (except for all the power they happily-but-stupidly handed over by signing up to the #CPTPPA and various other (non)'Free Trade Agreements')
