Friends were discussing scientific #crackpots, so I shared this personal experience with a crackpot:

Back in the days of print phone books, I got a letter published in _Sky and Telescope_ magazine, mostly just complimenting an article about the extreme future of the universe -- as in so extreme that black holes pop due to Hawking radiation, protons decay (if they can), etc.

A few weeks later, I got a bubble envelope with a letter and a self-published book. The letter started with something like, "As a scientist with connections to the in-crowd of the scientific establishment, I would like you to read my book and help get it past the gatekeepers who have conspired to keep it from reaching an audience."
