This week’s exciting and unexpected thing was watching this barred owl swoop into the creek and catch a crayfish! Then they flew to another branch and I assume plucked off the pinchers before chowing down! I had no idea owls ate crayfish and I also had no idea we had crayfish in this very urban stream. What's the best hashtag for a home aquarium? Anyway we got ourselves a "blue lobster" (aka crayfish).
I know they are kind of gimmicky but my kid is very into lobsters. This is as close as we can get without a more more expensive kit.

Have you tried fish traps? Here, I would use something like willow to build them.
When I wanted to check the population of #crayfish in our #pond, I built a makeshift #FishTrap of two 5l water bottles.
Initially, my wife laughed at me - until we checked next morning.
I baited with some meat and it worked like a charm.

It was at a park with a small spring-fed creek running across the slope. Only a foot wide, and a foot deep.
I had discovered large crayfish living in it, so I tore tiny bits of fried chicken and put them one by one in the water, watching as various hungry crayfish came out from their underwater burrows to eat the bits.
I didn't catch them. Just watched them.

Undoubtedly the gastronomic highlight of our recent trip to the tip of the top of mainland Australia. Locally caught freshly cooked large crayfish with salad & chips at the Seisia resort - yummy.🥳😷😷

Summer is roaring, with temperatures easily exceeding 32°C this early afternoon in NE #Switzerland.
Two days ago, I spotted a #crayfish in our local river, the #Toess. Before I knew it, the critter started to shed its skin - or armour much rather. Fascinating to witness that!
I recovered the empty shell to take some pics of it after. Got some strong Alien vibes, doesn't it? #nature

We have two species of burrowing crayfish living in the areas surrounding our creeks. When the ground gets a bit wet they'll make chimneys around some of the entries to their burrows.
As they live underground it's rare to actually see one of these crays so my photo below was the first (and still the only live) one of this species, Engaeus tayatea, on iNaturalist.
