Completely unexpected email from my private health fund saying they're refunding members for elective and extras not claimed due to pandemic restrictions.

Yes. Almost everywhere in the world to some degree. Either more formal or less formal. Im not familiar with forrmal #creditunions history in almost all former #Britishcolonies but the tradition is not limited to #englishspeaking counties.

With all the uncertainty going on during this banking crisis (I think the term ‘crisis’ is overdone, but whatever) consider your local credit union. I’ve been with mine for almost 20 years and the services and attention, not to mention better rates across the board, can be matched by the big banks

Had an interesting conversation about the general goverance collapse in US #creditunions over the past few decades, and stumbled upon an additional factor, beyond the shift in locus of control to regulators and the weakening of the #CommonBond, that I'd not considered before.

Namely, how the tax-exemption disincentivizes credit unions from allocating surplus as patronage, and thereby makes it so the equity stake of members is never more than a token amount.

I think it's a really really interesting model not just for Fediverse server operations, but for all sorts of things, in the tradition of #creditunions and other #coops.

They may not have cutting edge mobile apps or cool logos BUT credit unions have much better owners because they are owned by their members. Many credit unions have a low threshold for membership and with Co-Op Shared Branching (https://www.coop.org/Shared-Branch-ATM) you can have an account at a credit union in IL and transact in-branch at a co-op credit union in VT.

@Motherboard You mean like #CreditUnions ? Their greatest limitation is how they are severely restricted by states. The banking industry made it illegal for a sovereign people to create their own banking except under severe constraint in many states.

I just got a letter from my credit union. Given the timing, my reaction was "I am so glad to be at a credit union."

#BECU is refunding all NSF (overdraft) fees they charged members in _the last three years_.

You know, I think this really is "improving members' financial well-being."
