The Pembina Gorge dig was awesome - just... not a lot of cell coverage to upload awesome photos.

Great fish, our first plesiosaur, a bunch of birds, and some fun (modern) insects!

The Cretaceous featured some of life's most gorgeous crescendos of diversity, like the Yixian formation, where a Psitaccosaurus wants to visit the favourite tree of a group of Sinosauropteryxes, who are having none of it. This is still one of my favourite pieces I've ever drawn.

It’s ! 🍃🦣🦥🐴🐪🦬🐟 Back up 95 million years from last Friday’s skull cap - here are some Cretaceous leaf fossils found along the Cottonwood River while working with staff from the Science Museum of Minnesota.

These fossils were found within a patchy broken stratum of Cretaceous-age sandstone and clay.

Complex folding in Lower Cretaceous lacustrine shales of the Xiagou Formation, in the foothills of the Qilian Mountains near Nanhu and Changma, Gansu Province, China. Outcrops near here produced spectacular fossils of the ornithuromorph bird _Gansus_ among other fossils.

A lot of people like to call my usual artstyle , but I would say that is incorrect. Pointilism makes explicit use of color, whereas I only draw in b&w, so it is more accurate to call it .

So, here‘s my actual first attempt at pointilism. I tried to draw Baculites, a Late genus of which is notable for briefly surviving past the K-Pg impact.

When getting closer to -Alamo de , skies turn dark. Everywhere is water after the driest spring ever and temperatures above 36 in April. What a contrast. Ramblas and Barrancos turned into raging waters, the plain areas are soaked. Never seen so widespread before over the last 27 years..
And due to my own curiosity, got stuck in some mud...

Today’s is the ! This large lived in Alberta, Canada between 74 and 77 million years ago. At the time, the land supported a temperate forest that would have provided the cryodrakon with plenty of mammals, lizards, and baby dinosaurs to snack on. Like , cryodrakon was a member of azhdarchidae: a family of late pterosaurs characterized by long legs and necks. Most members of this family are very large, and cryodrakon had a wingspan of 33 feet.

For a long time, cryodrakon fossils were confused for quetzelcoatlus fossils. This was exacerbated by the delayed publication of a full description of quetzelcoatlus. However, the discovery of several European azhdarchidae species allowed for additional differentiation. When the original quetzelcoatlus bones became available to view, it became clear that cryodrakon was species distinct from its Southern cousin. In fact, crydrakon was apparently more robust than quetzelcoatlus, making it perhaps the largest pterosaur ever.

The ‘Champion’: Bones of a predatory dinosaur found in eastern Spain.

The discovery of a potential new species, which has been named in honour of a local football club, underlines the wealth of fossil deposits from the Cretaceous period in Castellón province.

The discovery of maxilla and vertebrae from a single specimen has led researchers to describe “a new spinosaurid genus and species”: Protathlitis cinctorrensis.

In 🪳news...

Many early cockroaches exhibited long (posterior organ for egg-laying), but by the those had mainly been lost.

Li, and Huang (2023) describe cockroaches from the Cretaceous that still have this feature. They speculate that shifts in plant diversity (less gymnosperms, more angiosperms) contributed to the demise of "long-tailed" cockroaches and that these fossils were some of the last of this group.
