Midnight Lace is a 1960 Ross Hunter-produced US crime film set in London which gave Doris Day her last, and best, serious dramatic role. It's almost a proto-giallo, but with echoes of GASLIGHT. A top-notch mystery/suspense/psychological thriller.

The Man with the Glass Eye (1969) is a late entry in Rialto's German Edgar Wallace krimi cycle. Maybe not the equal of the classic early krimis (and with a bit more blood) but rather enjoyable with some nice slightly surreal touches.

Accidental Death (1963), a solid entry in the British Edgar Wallace crime thriller cycle. The plot has some far-fetched elements but it’s enjoyable and has a few oddball touches that do give it an Edgar Wallace flavour.

The Asphalt Jungle (1950), John Huston’s faithful and excellent adaptation of W.R. Burnett’s great novel. An excellent film noir about a heist. Fine performance by Sterling Hayden. Marilyn Monroe has a bit part.

Film noir doesn't get any better than Edgar G. Ulmer’s bleak masterpiece of cinematic deception Detour (1945). Everything is against this poor schmuck. That's his story and he's sticking to it. Watch out for dames with claws.

The Verdict (1964) is a British Edgar Wallace B-movie. It concerns a gangster and a dubious visa which is a clue to a murder 20 years earlier. Well-made, well-acted, fast-moving, witty and clever with an intricate plot that works perfectly.

The Great Flamarion is an early (1945) Anthony Mann film noir. Erich von Stroheim, Dan Duryea and Mary Beth Hughes do a trick-shooting theatrical show but sexual jealousy and guns can be a nasty combination. Fine performances, good movie.

Bloody, scathing, deliriously over-the-top satire of late 80s capitalism. (And also unexpectedly touching.) If this doesn't quite make my Top 10, it's definitely in my Top 20. I love this film.

Ricochet (1963) is one of the many Edgar Wallace crime thrillers from England’s Merton Park Studios and it's a typical entry in that cycle. In other words it’s an excellent little B-movie. A solicitor decides to blackmail his own wife.

Fifth and sixth heist movies. In which two bank employees are menaced by robbers. Cash on Demand (1961) has villain who's smartly dressed and thoroughly urbane and menaces with words. The Silent Partner (1979) has Christopher Plummer as a psychopath so unsettling he'd scare paint off a wall.

Fourth heist movie. This 1955 film is almost a soap, looking at the lives and secrets of all the characters who'll be involved in the bank robbery at the end. Today it would be a 10-episode Netflix series. Here it's all wrapped up in a brisk and (still) gripping 90 minutes!

Third heist movie. A little dated now (1967) but still gripping. And it opens with the car chase that earned Peter Yates the chance to direct Bullitt.

A second light-hearted heist movie. I think about 3 people saw this, which is a pity, because it's clever and funny and Charles Grodin's deadpan voice-over is a delight.

Village police officer in Ireland takes on drug smugglers. And yes, it IS funny. The dialogue zings and every performer seems to be enjoying every second of their time in front of the camera.
