Part of a fossilized Crinoid stem and a Solitary Coral side by side. Deposited there by water currents/Sea movement over 300 million years ago.

It's a crinoid. The same animal we see fossils of from hundreds of millions ago. Most crinoids back then were stalked but most modern ones are unstalked. Like a feathery starfish. There are still some in the deep ocean that move around on their long body.
Juveniles are fixed with a stem while adults are free. The largest fossil found so far is 40 meters long.

Recently my Field Studies in #Geology class went to the Hausz Brothers Quarry in #Wisconsin to observe the #Pleistocene Lake Scuppernong sediments and #Ordovician bedrock strata of the #Platteville Formation. We collected #fossils while we were there, and this was my first time! Here are a few of the fossil #invertabrates that I collected from the Ordovician strata. This includes, from left to right, up to down: a #Crinoid, a #Cephalopod #nautiloid, a #Brachiopod and #Bryozoan, and a #Gastropod.

Large pieces of fossilized Crinoid stems. Crinoids are relatives of Starfish and Sea urchins that live on the ocean floors. When they die their bodies often break up into segments like the ones we see fossilized here. County Clare, Ireland.

A bunch of #fossils for #Fossilfriday, gifted to me by my colleague from the #zoologischesmuseumzürich. Due to incompleteness or lack of documentation they were deemed to not be scientifically useful, so rather than throwing them away to make storage room they decided to gift them for my private collection instead. At left is a piece of a #mammoth tooth, there‘s a few #ammonites and #brachiopods from Morroco and Switzerland and some #crinoid stems from #Spitzbergen. #paleontology #museums

In the Mesozoic there existed so-called crinoid barges, which were formed by sea lilies attaching themselves to the bottom of floating tree trunks. Some like Seirocrinus could grow up to 26 metres tall. A #FossilFriday post, my first. They’re the only things I’ve consciously collected & kept with me over the years, while other things (e.g. albums, books) have been pared away, sometimes drastically, in my last few moves. Not a huge or particularly unique collection, mostly ammonites & trilobites. A few I found myself but most of them were purchased. The pos/neg ammonite halves I got in Lyme Regis, so they’re particularly special to me.
