As a #librarian and one of the few people still masking in my library/on campus, I really appreciate this essay: “Dominant COVID Narratives and Implications for Information Literacy in the ‘Post-Pandemic’ United States”

I finally finished Melissa Adler's Cruising the Library earlier this week and I've been rotating the epilogue about masochism & library users as masochists in my head for days now.
Academia is bad most of the time but (I am discovering) sometimes it's about how you can be a horny weirdo in the face of problems. That bit's alright.

please boost! ! The Queer Metadata Collective is looking for feedback from #catalogers #metadata workers #critcat #critlib #archivists #dh #histsex folks on questions or dillemmas they have encountered while describing individuals/communities/items
Some hypotheticals from working groups:
Classification:
* Some classification systems separate books about gay, lesbian, bisexual (etc) groups into different areas of the library. Should local practices override that in order to group them together?

@TeamMidwest @dsalo Overall this is one of the best (externally-written) articles about librarianship I've read in quite while!
The one thing that does strikes me as deeply weird is that, despite having so many links in the article, there isn't one to an article or talk by Fobazi.
The Willa Cather Archive (an institution) gets a link, and a collective response to a bad example of journalism does, as do more historical librarian-written things like Dee Garrison's work.
But a current librarian making noteworthy intellectual contributions? An individual in the field who could benefit from citation counts & prominence? Why accidentally reinforce the article's point by doing this exact same type of omission? #CritLib
Call for proposals from up//root. "This collection aims to convey the multifaceted nature of (un)belonging to place, people, and self through critical and/or queer of color critique perspectives. up//root asks that contributors’ submissions interrogate coloniality, white supremacy, patriarchy, white feminism, and/or racial capitalism as they impact archives, libraries, information workers, LIS education, and/or the information landscape."

Trying to get back in the habit of writing quick "weekly notes" posts.
This one somehow lead to me writing briefly about #InformationHumanities (or maybe #CriticalInformationHumanities?), a notion that's been on my mind ever since I started to see how strongly GLAM practices are biased toward mistaking counting for meaning. #critLib
I'd love to get people's feedback on which term makes more sense to them! https://www.ryanpatrickrandall.com/weekly-assemblage/wa-2023-week-09

What aspects of human relationships to what we regard as "information" might change if instead of "discovery layers" these things were referred to as "encounter layers"?
Where else can inaccurate, ahistorical uses of "discovery" be removed from LIS work? #critLib #criticalLibrarianship
