Just read a “history” of gay/queer symbology that basically had the symbols in the correct chronological order and their originators were all correct but the verbiage around the time line was all wrong, presentist misinterpretations of the past based on current political shibboleths and false revisionist narratives that would’ve been bizarre and unrecognizable to people at the time. (to be fair, a good deal of the academic history of the post stonewall movement is also badly framed because the boomers wrote the first academic histories and wrote their navel-gazing bias into the record, setting the terms of the discussion ever since.) #Crotchety
