Sad news in the Austrian media about the “death” of the Pasterze Glacier, once the largest in country. I went directly to this location at the start of my last sabbatical, as a pilgrimage of sorts. The was breath-taking, even if the signs of rapid retreat were overwhelming. Now the tongue of in the valley has completely detached from the accumulation area higher up. Another indication of how dramatically things are changing in the

The Nuuk area in western Greenland (the type locality of ) is one of the places where sea level is falling! Not only is ice melting, uncovering new rocks and unloading the lithosphere, but the mass of ice that's missing no longer attracts the water, so it recedes. Read more at the Arctic Hub:

Can cast shadows be used to infer changes in glacier elevations? Yes, they can. Check out our new paper in The Cryosphere and this blog post: topotoolbox.wordpress.com/2023

While the loses its everlasting snow forever –
-70% by 2100, and more later, see State of the 2022 chapter 3: iccinet.org/statecryo2022/
– so while that ice goes, the earth crust in the Himalaya's rebounds = uplifts.
Any bets on whether that rebound is balanced by sinking of the Indian subcontinent?
It'd speed up nicely there – and is going to cause some cool , too, I suppose.

Since the ice sheet vanished in the Holocene, that land mass is in uplift . But the landmass in Northern Germany balances that uplift like a seesaw by sinking. Which spells faster sea level rise from there as @DrEvanGowan explains here: fediscience.org/@DrEvanGowan/1

I assume, we'll soon see the same in the Himalaya region. Except there are billions of people and fertile lands all around
affected by
* sea level rise due to the seesaw,
* lack of melt water and the resulting drought,
* rapidly changing weather patterns due to heated rock surfaces replacing cold snow

and by quakes.

"Too late now to save Arctic summer ice, climate scientists find. The world was on the brink of multiple disastrous tipping points. Ice-free summers inevitable even with sharp emissions cuts and likely to result in more extreme heatwaves and floods. The research shows that 90% of the melting is the result of human-caused global heating, with natural factors accounting for the rest. We need to reduce CO2 emissions more ambitiously and also prepare to adapt to this faster Arctic warming and its impacts on human society and ecosystems.”

Not so long ago, in the Antarctic:

"...part of the ice sheet was thinner several thousand years ago than it is now and subsequently thickened."

Yay! Why?

"...because of concern that present ice thinning in this region may lead to rapid, irreversible sea level rise.

But uh-oh:

"...however, reversal required at least 3000 years to complete."

“I don’t think we want to live in a global . Why do you want to go to a place and see the same weeds you can see in your back garden?”

“We’ve introduced to the bottom of the world. They’re destroying it
Research published in Scientific Data this month suggests humans have introduced 1125 new species to the Southern Ocean islands, which surround , and 135 to the frozen continent itself. The list reads like an exotic menagerie: budgerigars, canaries, geese, terrapins, opossums, hedgehogs, pigs, reindeer, hamsters, foxes and even monkeys. These species have hunted local and destroyed native plants. The problem is going to get worse. Australian explorers noted so feral they had basically become wolves.”

“The Svartisen in is one of the few places on earth where can really be seen in action… not just from the outside, but from the inside. Deep beneath the glacier, in a chamber at the end, scientists come face to face with ice. Then it’s two days of hard work using hot water to melt a big enough to get inside the glacier and see it in all its glory.”
