@Cali Today's is quite complicated. If you're truly wanting to learn using pencil and paper look at this book Elementary Cryptanalysis by Sinkov (archive.org/details/elementary) . Some of these problems can be hard to solve but will teach a way of thinking.

In the early 2000s, the field began to diversify, and when the term was introduced by industry, public administration and academia, everybody was forced to specialize.

It was around that time, when breaking things (in terms of , and in general) was considered an interesting field of work, whereas defending systems and designing and engineering things securely from the ground up seemed not attractive to many people.
