Article highlighting a new paper in #GreatLakes Research on links between #algalblooms and #hypoxia. Low oxygen in the Central Basin is an important impairment to the #LakeErie ecosystem that will be a focus of the 🇨🇦🇺🇸 Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative #CSMI next year. We are in the midst planning many projects to target #geochemistry, #nutrients, #foodwebs and habitat use during the 2024 fieldyear.

Always nice to see the crew return safely to the Canada Centre for Inland Waters in Burlington from the monthly #Toronto #StCatharines #LakeOntario sampling done for the 2023 🇨🇦🇺🇸 Collaborative Science and Monitoring Initiative #CSMI. 6 stations, 140 km! Long day and a little rough on the lake, but our biologists and #uwaterloo coop students toughed it out. We collected #plankton to study lower #foodwebs and water for chemistry and to measure algae and bacteria growth rates. #GreatLakes

A little bit of cut and paste magic, and look at the number of #science vessels working on #LakeOntario right now! I found 5 (likely there are additional smaller ones) from #DFO (CCGS Limnos), EPA Lake Guardian, USGS Kaho, MNRF Ontario Explorer and NYDEC Seth Green. All with different focus from water quality, #plankton foodwebs, and fisheries science. #CSMI

The #DFO #ECCC #CSMI 🇨🇦🇺🇸 #LakeOntario cruise is moving along nicely on the CCGS #Limnos. The stations off Oswego, NY take a little longer because these are the deepwater stations for Lake Ontario with max depth of 244 meters (802 feet). These are stations where we will most likely catch Mysis diluviana, an important #FoodWebs #zooplankton. We should be done the US waters stations by end of today and move to the north shore to complete the survey. #CooperativeScience #Plankton #Chemistry

The CCGS #Limnos is busy and full! There are 14 scientists on board from #DFO and #ECCC plus the Coast Guard crew. It is also *HOT 🔥 with the air temperatures over the #GreatLakes ridiculously near 30C in April! The engineer rigged up an extra air duct to keep our incubators we use for algal primary productivity cool, because we need to have the water at lake temperature, which is 4-7C. Limnos is currently sampling the #LakeOntario deeper stations off Rochester, NY. #CSMI 🇨🇦🇺🇸 #Science

One day into the DFO-ECCC #Limnos #CSMI #LakeOntario monitoring cruise and we have completed 16 stations. Notice that this is lake-wide sampling - including US waters because water currents and biota cross borders!
The Limnos works 24/7 so we have day and night shifts sampling and processing water samples. The ship is currently at Station 33, one of our major long-term monitoring sites which DFO has sampled back to the 1970s.
Our primary #DFOscience research vessel for the #GreatLakesLaboratory, the CCGS Limnos, left this afternoon for an 8 day research and monitoring mission to support the #GreatLakes 🇨🇦🇺🇸 Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative #CSMI field year for #LakeOntario. This spring cruise is in collaboration with Environment and Climate Change Canada #ECCC, and we are collecting chemical, biological, and contaminants samples for many partners, including #EPA, #Cornell, and others. #plankton

For our #GreatLakes lower trophic group, 2022 was a very productive and busy year. We sampled for the #WinterGrab in Feb, produced reports for year end, published 5 manuscripts, organized two conference sessions, hired a new biologist to join our team and two sets of students, completed fieldwork in Hamilton Harbour, Toronto Harbour, and coordinated 🇺🇲🇨🇦 Lake Ontario, Lake Erie and Lake Huron #CSMI for a total of 64 days at sea. None of this could have been completed without the talented team.👍
