The Collective Security Treaty Organization (#CSTO) is an intergovernmental military alliance in Eurasia consisting of six post-Soviet states: #Armenia, #Belarus, #Kazakhstan, #Kyrgyzstan, #Russia, and #Tajikistan.
Russian peacekeeping forces are deployed in the region of Nagorno-Karabakh (Armenia) which is surrounded by #Azerbaijan. Currently the Russian 102nd Military Base is located in Gyumri and Russian 3624th Airbase in Erebuni Airport near Yerevan (all located in Armenia).

On 1 January, #Kazakhstan|s Imangali Tasmagambetov took over as GenSec of #CSTO for a 3-year term.
It's a risky assignment given the organisations fundamental legitimacy problems particularly in the #Caucasus, but probably the best post a #Nazarbayev -connected political heavyweight like him can expect in the fundamentally new environment shaped by #Tokayev.
