This is the rosette of the Belgian RV Belgica, with the CTD comfortably lying below. We go out to the North Sea once a year with the students of our mater in oceanography, for a fieldwork day. Pretty much all the activities revolve around this beauty ๐Ÿคฉ. Here the view from the control room as the rosette is lowered at one of our stations.

if you are still on the bird platform, pop over tomorrow, for where one and only Kim Martini aka Crazy Banana (who once put Miley Cyrus on CTD) will do AMA on CTDs

Another use is a mix of the drifting CTD and the CTD profiling down from a ship. ARGO floats drift with ocean currents at 1 km depth. At set times, typically every 10 days, they adjust their buoyancy and lower themselves down to 2km, after which they come up to the surface while measuring ocean properties. At the surface they transmit the data to shore and go back down for another cycle.

CTDs can also be fitted into ocean drifters. These buoys follow ocean surface currents using their sea anchor (a 15m long holey sock hanging down beneath the buoy). They transmit their data and GPS position to shore via satellite.

CTD sensors are also fitted in moorings. Here are CTDs on the RV Neil Armstrong being prepared for the OSNAP mooring array. These moorings are weighed down with an anchor on the seafloor and a cable extends several km up towards the upper ocean. With CTDs and current meters we measure ocean volume, heat and salt transport.
