Figurehead from the whale ship Flora. Flora was built in Groton CT 1811, however her figurehead was not placed on her bow until 1823. The tradition of placing a figurehead began with the Egyptians and Phoenicians. Carved birds, or horses jutting out from the bows of ships provided better vision, or protection. Through the centuries the practice of having a figurehead spread across the world, and the figures themselves evolved from animals to people. #history #maritimehistory #CThistory
