Loch Coruisk (in Scottish Gaelic, Coire Uisg, the "Cauldron of Waters") is an inland fresh-water loch, lying at the foot of the Black Cuillin in the Isle of Skye, in the Scottish Highlands.

The northern end of the loch is ringed by the Black Cuillin, often wreathed in cloud. From the southern end the Scavaig River, only a few hundred yards long, discharges into a sea loch, Loch Scavaig. The loch is nearly 2 miles (3 kilometres) long and c. 400 yards (370 metres) wide.

Another stunning day and once again the Cuillins have a cloud duvet this evening.

Contrary to popular belief this is not a swarm of midges... although an understandable mistake given recent days 🙄 🙂

Our visitors seldom make the trip to Elgol to take a boat trip to the heart of the Cuillins. This painting is described as “A Loch north of Hadrian's Wall”. It is by Walter Severn (1830 – 1904), professionally a civil servant, known as a water-colour artist.

Loch Coruisk is an inland fresh-water loch, lying at the foot of the Black Cuillin in the Isle of Skye. The loch is reputed to be the home of a kelpie or water horse, a shape-shifting creature that can assume human form.

Sometimes the light hereabouts takes my breath away. I was out walking on a road with no traffic - it goes across the moor and on to some forestry land - and no one else around. No signs of human habitation. An eternal scene. Been like this for eons. Will be here long after I’m gone.

Snow fell on the Cuillins only last week. They looked like a Toblerone carton. Now the snow is nearly gone. It’s the time for new growth. Greenery has returned to the land. Springtime is really here. Joy Abounds! This is the view from Roag.

“The far Cuillins are pullin' me away,
As take I wi' my crummack to the road.
The far Cuillins are puttin' love on me,
As step I wi' the sunlight for my load.”

You know when you get an ear worm? I don’t know if it’s the same thing exactly but I am frequently stirred to song when I see the Cuillins. I posted this song before. I won’t do it again on case you too get infected. It does have a great walking rhythm. I sing it to the dog as we head to the beach…

Some days the peaks of the , twenty or so miles away from the village, are completely lost in the mist. At other times they appear hazy and distant. On a clear day with the slopes covered in high contrast snow they seem just out of reach.

Collie and MacKenzie statue in Glen Sligachan, Skye. Famous skye mountaineers.
This is a very atmospheric statue overlooking the Cuillin mountain range.

Cuillin sunrise. During an early morning trip to the mainland I observed this amazing sunrise. This inspired my Dawn.

I love the west coast of Scotland. The light never fails to thrill me. That’s a mountain on the Isle of Skye with Raasay in the right of the shot. I took this shot from Applecross

Cuillin sunset.
I took this photograph two weeks ago, just as the sun was setting. The Cuillin range is covered with a thick layer of snow. The clouds changed from grey to mauve to light blue and pink. The clear sky behind the mountains was a pale orange. The sun highlighted the deep crags and gullies on the mountains. There wasn't a breath of wind in the cold January air.

‘The Shortening Winter’s Day’*

The Cuillins in the distance. The landscape of Skye and some sheep. A winter’s day. Mid December. Greys, palest yellow, purples, blues, greens, browns and ochres, o, and sheep colour. There is a smattering of snow. This is our nearest viewpoint on the main road. Overcast and fast approaching sunset.

(*The title of a famous painting by Joseph Farqharson. This is nothing like it)
