Via Martelli da Piazza del Duomo alla fine dell'ottocento tutta colorata a mano ovviamente.
🌏In the late nineteenth century, Via Martelli, stretching from Piazza del Duomo, was adorned with vibrant hand-painted colors, giving it a charming and lively appearance.

Fun facts I just learnt: the influential philosopher of language Michael Dummett co-founded and was then president of the International Playing Card Society, co-founded the association for Bolognese tarocchino (a historical local card game in Bologna), and published extensively on the history of card games and tarot.

If you like to know more about ordinary "stuff" and are curious about a lot of things, I have the for you (and me). The episode I am listening to now is for instance about motorway services, the threadmill and ties. Who made them? Why? How? Where? And bonus points if you are a royal fan, as one of the hosts are lady Diana's brother, he is very knowledgeable and entertaining.

Have you checked out the programme for the international conference “Deciphering Censorship: From regulation to the production of invisibilities, from the archive to the Internet”?

Besides the excellent communications, Nicole Moore (UNSW), Robert Darnton (Harvard University), and Richard Burt (University of Florida) will be our keynote speakers.

📘 Anita Buhin published a book — "Yugoslav Socialism „Flavoured with Sea, Flavoured with Salt”" — where she explores the "Mediterranization" in socialist Yugoslavia during the 1950s and 1960s, which was largely shaped by Italian cultural influences and in which Croatia played an extremely important role.

On 16 March 1938, at about 22:00, two SA men arrived at the house of prominent Austrian philosopher, historian, journalist and critic Egon Friedell to arrest him. While they were still arguing with his housekeeper, Friedell committed suicide by jumping out of the window. Before leaping, he warned pedestrians walking on the sideway where he hit by shouting “Watch out! Get out of the way!“.

I'd argue that 's " and " is quite pedagogical in weaving in both and description and (and other kinds of ).

What's peculiar about it is that he is being defensive: he will be linking a beloved, canonical author (Jane Austen) with a violent, execrable history of domination, so he better back up not only what he is saying, but also what he is doing. To do that, he anchors in a careful reading of the . To say that is not about may be right, but while colonialism "is ... incidental, referred to only in passing" (so you need to read carefully to notice), it is also "absolutely crucial to the action" (so you should want to parse it if you want to get the novel).

Just gave an interview on my research on and the of - relating war experiences of the past to those of the present. The horror of human suffering, excitement at the impression of (almost) real-time media coverage, the need to hedge escalatory dynamics - all these link the early modern to our (postmodern) experiences.
Yes, we need , and not just in modern history, to understand the present! Beyond mere project funding...

"Jade McGlynn, an Oxford academic and author of the forthcoming Russia’s War, explains why it is so hard for Russia to relinquish Ukraine. “Sergei Lavrov [the Russian foreign minister], for instance, says that without Russia, Ukraine does not have any history. But it is actually the opposite. Without Ukraine, Russia’s understanding of its own identity – this third Rome, based on Orthodoxy, this gathering of all the lands of Rus – does not really work. You cannot espouse this state messianic role if you cannot convince ethnic Russians to join you in cultural communion and you to have bomb them.

“That is why it is going to be very hard for Russia ever to accept this war has failed.”
