I travelled to Longford by bike and train today for a meeting and I have to say the drivers in Longford town were nothing but courteous to me on the road.

I got back to Dublin and within two minutes of leaving the station I had been close passed twice.

The second driver then went on to drive down the bus lane on Pearse Street, past Pearse Street Garda Station, through the bus gate at College Green and on to Dame Street.

I'm sitting there having my lunch on the lovely newly landscaped Francis Street when this guy pulls up in his van onto the paved area right in front of me, sticks on his hazards, leaves the engine running and takes out his phone to make a call.

Perfectly normal behaviour. I'm sure the council are delighted the money they spent on the public realm enhancement isn't going to waste.

This car was parked here for at least two hours today unchallenged. A garda car drove past it the second time I passed and the gardaí didn't see fit to act.

He has six previous convictions including one for speeding and was travelling at 180km/h in a 100km/h zone - in any other civilised country he would be off the road, and may even be in prison. In Ireland, he gets a slap on the wrist and is let off to do it again tomorrow.

In Japan they have a law that prohibits you from buying a car unless you have space to park it. I'd suggest that it might be a useful law to adopt here in Ireland, but we already have a law prohibiting parking on footpaths so I'm not sure it would make much difference.

The council also installed a lot of these around schools over the last couple of years. Again, their necessity is evidenced by the damage done to them. Even with bright yellow pencil shaped bollards, people are still trying to park on footpaths at double yellow lines on the approach to a school where hundreds of children aged 4-12 walk each morning and afternoon.

The driver of this Jaguar thought it would be a good idea to pull out of a side road while I was passing, forcing me into the parking zone.

As usual, I caught up with him at the next lights and before I could ask whether he had seen me, he wound down his window and said "put on your f**king hi-viz...you shouldn't be f**king cycling without a hi-viz".

There are four signs in quick succession leading up to this point all telling you that it is a 24 hour cycle lane and a clearway.

He killed a three year old, left her father with brain damage and got away with a modest fine, a suspended sentence and a four-year driving ban.

Today, Ennis Circuit Court Judge Francis Comerford restored his licence after only three years.

This is not justice.

Maybe he felt that because his car is as big as a bus he had a right to drive in the bus/bike lane, or maybe he just thinks he's better than everyone else and those rules are for other people.

Either way, he didn't like being called out on it and let me know when he eventually did turn left 150m further down the road.
