My goal is to just contact people at these agencies (MetroNorth-MTA, NYSDOT, NYCDOT) and pass along what I have learned in the hope they will do all the hard work and I can rest knowing those dams have been destroyed and the #BronxRiver can flow freer than it has in 100 years. Alas it is straightened and I cannot expect that to change. After the #dams are removed the #culverts are next.
“The partnership includes eight regional and local-level partners and dozens of other supporters who are exploring beaver-based #restoration according to Kristen Larson, executive director of the Luckiamute Watershed Council in Polk and Benton counties.
Despite centuries of #beaver annihilation for their fur, the beaver persists, clogging #culverts, creating ponds, moving channels, chewing up young trees.
“The conflicts exist, but there are lots of ways to coexist, said Chris Jordan of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. #NOAA provides technical support to the partnership.”

@Pando Yes! For example, one of the reasons that the #salmon populations have plummeted on the west coast is that our infrastructure (culverts) blocks their #migration. Duh!
(#beavers help boost salmon populations by creating microhabitats for salmon at every stage of their lives. And flow devices to prevent #beaver conflicts at #culverts can be designed with #fish passages.)

Road #culverts are the most common sites for problematic beaver damming. A blocked road culvert can quickly cause dangerous and expensive road safety issues. Fortunately, nearly every road culvert can be protected from #beavers in a cost-effective, long-term, environmentally friendly and humane manner. Which beaver control method is best depends upon the site.
In honor of tribal fishing rights, Washington State is replacing undersized culverts statewide to restore fish habitat.
This project at Chico Creek replaced a 36-inch pipe with a bridge, and realigned the stream bed to open up 21 miles of salmon-spawning habitat.
Chum salmon are already exploring a tributary that was blocked by a highway embankment.

Debris torrent at site of recent culvert replacement. This should not have happened. There hasnt been enough rain to cause this under normal circumstances. A salmon bearing stream runs a few hundred yards below this road failure.
The equipment operator pulled out all the coyote bush by the roots adjacent to the site, and accidentally changed the rd hydrology just enough so water came straight down the road instead of into the culvert.
Notice the coyote bush that wasnt pulled, on the left and right of the debris torrent has not slid. A lesson to be learned, let coyote bush stand near culverts outlets. And road equipment operators who understand hydrology are extremely rare, and worth their weight in gold.
Lucky i collected a bunch of ca wild blue rye grass (Elymus Glaucus) earlier in the year from this site. I will seed it this week.

Need a minute of calm today? Here's a video of a moose sniffing a blueberry bagel. Not my video just some guy on Youtube, he's also known as Post10 there and drives around clearing out culverts and stuff.
