To add context for anyone interested in the layout of the site, here is some lidar data, which makes it much clearer than Google Maps can, as it reveals what's hidden under the tree cover. I'd scrambled through those ditches a hundred times and never realised how they formed a picture with the landscape until I saw maps showing this.

My guess would be that they post-date the (second pic) outside the embankments, but I'm no expert.

Apparently is a thing too.

My favourite is Routin Lynn.

The name means 'roaring pool' in Old English, and is also the name of a nearby farm. The steep little gorge into which the waterfall drops combines with with large ditches, and another deep burn that joins this one, to create an enclosed, triangular area.

The usage is unknown, but just outside the ditches is a large rock outcrop with carvings.

A lot of people comment on how peaceful it feels here.
