Contrordine, nonostante quanto inizialmente annunciato qualche mese fa, Ubuntu 23.10 continuerà ad usare CUPS nel classico formato DEB. A comunicare la notizia su Ubuntu Discourse è stato Till Kamppeter, sviluppatore di Canonical nonché responsabile del progetto OpenPrinting.

Ubuntu 23.10 Won’t Use a Snap’d Printing Stack After all

Ubuntu was planning to ship the CUPS printing stack as a Snap in 23.10 — but after several months of testing its changed its mind. Accordingly, a DEB-based printing stack will feature in Ubuntu 23.10 “Mantic Minotaur” and in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Switching to the CUPS Snap will now happen in the Ubuntu 24.10 release (but work on it will continue in the Ubuntu Core Desktop builds). So what gives? This reversal is undoubtedly disappointing for the devs working on it but it is the right decision for end-users — for the time being. The CUPS Snap doesn’t support all :sys_more_orange:

@tek I used to like HP because at one time their printers were 99% likely to "just work" with #CUPS. Also, Lexmarks were garbage.

HP sucks because of the vendor lock-in of the firmware of some models. The E series, I think.

The solution to crappy firmware is to disassemble the firmware, figure out how it works, and write an open source replacement that shares no more code with the original than is absolutely required to make it work.

When I was kid a few of my friend's dads had a full on bar the basement. This is my 'bar in the basement'. A weird hallway off the kitchen - add a wall, some shelves, and #ikea cabinets - becomes my coffee nook. #espresso #coffee #tea #diy #cups.

Sometimes I wish we (in linux) had a better alternative to #cups ... but then I remember I dont have to reboot daily to install my updates and forget about it again.
