Ancient Cracked Mud Found on Mars

NASA's Curiosity Rover has discovered a region of Mars that seems to be covered in ancient preserved mud in a classic hexagonal pattern. What makes this spot exciting is that the mud is cracked, indicating it went through several cycles of being wet and then dried out again. Areas like this can preserve microbial life, where it doesn't stay too wet or dry for very long, and could be the perfect place for life to gain a foothold on the Red Planet.

Depuis quelques années, la perceuse de Curiosity ne fonctionne plus aussi bien et la poussière prélevée ne peut plus passer par le tube. Pour la distribuer aux labos SAM et CheMin, le rover met sa perceuse au-dessus des orifices et la secoue. 14/37

J'ai pu tenir en main un exemplaire d'ingénierie de la perceuse de Curiosity. C'est lourd ! On voit le tube par lequel le matériau prélevé va dans SAM ou CheMin. La dernière photo montre des tests de forage. Un trou fait le diamètre de l'auriculaire. 13/37

One of the reasons why people feel so much #alienation from #science is that no relevant connections are offered for their lives.

We need to think beyond #industry, #government, and #engineering when we think about #practical #applications of scientific #research. #Philosophy, #politics, and #art are relevant applications as well, and often more personal to people who feel alienated from science as we know it.

Nuclear physics feels more relevant when you're talking about Geiger counters being used to assess accident sites than when you're talking about them being used at bomb testing sites, even though the physics is essentially the same. Biochemistry feels more relevant when you're talking about water testing to monitor aquatic ecosystems for toxins than when you're talking about quality control for PepsiCo, even if you're talking about pH testing in both cases. Astronomy feels more relevant when you're talking about beautiful, profound JWST images that taught you something that amazed you about the universe we live in, than when it's a simple list of "fun facts" about galaxies. Chemistry feels more relevant when you get to try an experiment yourself in different ways, than when you're watching someone else do it formulaically.

Because one directly impacts people's lives for the better in meaningful ways, and the other causes harm, exists only for profit, or is totally abstract. One involves the #active #participation and #engagement of the learner with their own #curiosity, and the other is being lectured to by someone who thinks they know what's "really" important.

If you want to #interest more people in #learning and science, ask them #questions. Emphasize the #process of science, don't treat it as a set of established #facts. Engage with #issues of #representation and #ethics in your field, as well as #interdisciplinary work. And find ways to make your work felt positively in people's lives. Change what a #scientist is, and what science is for.

Mud cracks on Mars hint at conditions that could have formed life long ago, according to a new study by NASA scientists. The study analyzed images of ancient lake deposits the Curiosity rover took and found evidence of desiccation cracks that indicate periodic drying and wetting cycles. Mars had a climate more hospitable to life than previously thought, and microbial life could have thrived in the shallow lakes and ponds.
