Tasmania has 12 endemic bird species although some claim it's as many as 18. Anyway, on our road trip we were lucky enough to see a few.
- Tasmanian Native Hen
- Black Currawong
- Dusky Robin
- Green Rosella
(As well as Tasmanian Wedge Tailed Eagles which are sometimes considered endemic.)
I was particularly happy to see a Dusky Robin which I didn't know about before this trip. We also saw Pink Robins and Scarlet Robins.
Anyway, the only worthwhile photo was of a Black Currawong who was quite friendly when we went to Dip Falls

Here is Lofty sneaking a drink in the front bath earlier in the year.
Lofty
A juvenile Currawong who lives in the front, who occasionally jumps in the front bath, makes a surprise visit in the yard. No magpies around, so Lofty is safe, for now.
The local currawong chorus has been going off! The currawong is a large black and white Australian songbird. One of their tunes is a distinct "currawong", as can be heard at about 1:15 on in this youtube video I found. https://youtu.be/3JxnPA6VmsI
My recording is attached and needs sound up.

The youngster #Currawong is back. Relaxing in the sun, taking a drink. Taking in the morning silence.

Feeling homesickish again, so here is a photo of a typical Tasmanian sight, particularly in the highlands: a Currawong.
They look and behave kind of like ravens, but they're a totally different family. And their song is beautiful.

It’s #summernats weekend and the air is thick with car exhaust and the streets with souped-up old cats and 4WDs.
I went for a walk and almost choked on the fumes. I’m surprised half the birds haven’t fallen off their perches, the exhaust is do thick.
I have about 8 #Currawong refugees huddled on my veranda tonight.

Here is the bat v. currawong duel.
A brief explanation: when the bat colony is up-river, the bats routinely fly along the course of the river when leaving and returning. Unfortunately the local Currwongs are extremely territorial, particularly when they're nesting, and the bats sometimes fly too close (for a Currawong that means "within visual range"), and the Currawong proceeds to chase the bat off, screaming insults. In some cases it does more than pursue, it attacks, as seen in this example. Same caveats apply (low light, fast-moving subject, lousy photographer). For the faint-hearted, the bat survived.
Also from a different attack, the bat and currawong flying at street level, just as a pedestrian walks past a life-size plastic giraffe (I kid you not) and zebra in a front yard. Seeing is believing.
[Edit. For reasons known only to itself, autocorrect suffers from Monty Python disease and can't say the letter "c" (what a silly bunt), and changes "currawong" to "burrawong". Fixed. ]

Ok, as threatened, here are some more #BatsOfMastodon #batstodon
Quality is variable, mostly tending to poor (low light, ISO noise, motion blur, all synonyms for amateur photographer).
However I can promise a few shots you've probably never seen before, one capturing IN ONE FRAME, ladies and gentlemen, a bat, a Currawong, a giraffe, a zebra, a human, and a Bus Zone sign.
Also the Bat v. Currawong aerial duel.
Plus some close encounters of the chiropteric kind.
I'll thread these up.

I would like to introduce Muriel a Currawong. I hand raised her and she still visits and steals the olives from our tree. #Currawong #Birdlife #Wildlife
